Trip to Jool, landing on all 5 moons. Ascended with a turbojet, circularized with an ion engine. Landers for Tylo and Laythe. Ion lander for the other moons.

Missions highlights:

  • Re-entered while trying to orbit Kerbin.
  • Smooth landings and takeoffs at Laythe and Tylo.
  • Ran out of fuel and had to abuse the eva jetpack.
  • Ion lander used for Bop. Pol was done with jetpack.
  • Returned to Kerbin safely.

Detailed album of the trip.

Thanks for the kind words dudes. And it was barely possible. Before the update that changed SAS it would've been easier to do, and much lighter. Now it's hard to get a Jool 5 craft in orbit with just a turbojet and an ion engine. Hell, my craft even re-entered temporarily.

Nice work, for what it's worth, I always found it hard to get LKO on a jet.

DUDE!!! It's you. I studied your craft and image gallery! I couldn't have done this if it weren't for you! And it took a month of trying to fly my ship into orbit. So many fails.

Hey thanks!

I'd studied Mesklin, chickenblender, Ziv, & all before making my run. All the Jool 5 ( http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/57197-THE-ULTIMATE-JOOL-5-CHALLENGE-land-Kerbals-on-all-moons-and-return-in-one-big-misson ) flavors are a great challenge, I sure learned heaps, even trying fragments of it. Check out the mass trajectory on the low mass sub-challenge: 724 ton, 144, 123, ...

Hanniballa,

I've reviewed your entry, and determined that it meets all requirements for a Jool-5 Low Mass Challenge entry. Well done!

Lots of gamey use of massless parts, which is almost required for this sort of challenge. Very creative use (abuse?) of the jet pack, but you managed to bring the lander can home to Kerbin. You definitely have more patience than I do - ions are not my thing. I like you how made a cage of sorts with the ion lander legs to hold the jet packing kerbal in place while pushing the craft.

And thank you for putting text in with the pics - it made it easy to follow the action.

I like Ion engines because they give you so much dv, and with a small enough lander they can land on most bodies. The landing legs were never designed to support a Kerbal on eva, but they worked out great. Thanks for taking the time to judge my trip dude!
