A Last Hurrah for Stock Aero

That's not silly, that's realistic. IRL, if you get something going fast enough, it will fly.

Indeed. But it's quite possible to do flying cars with body lift, for instance, or practically any shape you like provided you have enough control to keep it straight. Tetrydis has been spending a lot of time showing that most of stock aero is just a downside.

I will say this for the old aero model. Part of the fun of any game is in learning the system, figuring out what you can do with it. Unrealistic aerodynamics added just enough lolwtf that we had fun finding out where the boundaries lay, and sometimes they lay in unexpected places. It'll be a time worth remembering.

Why would you not expect that thing to fly? "Realistic" is not the same thing as earth-like. Kerbin will still be a place of magic, with high gravity and thick atmosphere. Jet engines will still provide the godlike thrust to muscle nearly anything skyward.

Another issue, one that will probably never be addressed, is that the new atmo model will still have to treat flat boards as "wings". Having different left and a right wing parts, and symmetrical non-wings for use as vertical stabilizers, would radically increase the total part court of the stock game. There isn't any room. So the exploits and general wackiness aren't going to stop.

If you want to look back at that terrible placeholder as if it is even slightly worthy of nostalgia, be my guest.

Considering there wouldn't have been a game without it, I think I'll do just that.

Like the Mk1 Command Pod and the Round8 Toroidal Fuel Tank, I think it's important to know what once was and no longer is, instead of just leaving it to the wind.

Good Bye old aero.

We´ve had a lot of fun together, but it´s time to move on. Let´s depart in friendship. We´ll always have the memorys.

Please don´t make a scene and don´t send creepy letters.

Oh, I almost forgot. My friend Dumbo says he´ll miss you too.

And to all those naggers: I think this was supposed to be FUN-thread. Pls don´t ruin it. We already know your opinion. We´ve read about it over and over and over again. thx

Here's another one from a time when I sent an orbital kethane refinery to Jool. The refinery had two scanning probes, two landers, and a kethane miner/tanker all attached at launch with nary a fairing in sight.

Farewell to all my old craft that won't work because they were holding on by their fingernails.... my 0.16 relics, my 1400 part bigger-than-life shuttle, my electric-turbine infinite atmosphere motors.... Everything's gone. :(

yeah, im actually starting to worry that ill never again be able to pull off stuff like this:

Javascript is disabled. View full album

6000 dV, laythe roundtrip capable SSTO that weighs 9.5t fully fueled. With the jets almost 100% guaranteed to get a mega nerf (and being unlikely to achieve orbit alone anymore), its most likely goodbye to my Tri-Fighter line of SSTO interceptors after 1.0 hits. They might still be useable, but i doubt theyll be able to do a lathe roundtrip anymore while remaining as light and compact as they are now.

As excited as i am for better aerodynamics, reentry heat, and the usual bug fixes/extra features, im kinda sad that so many of my old sci-fi builds will most likely become obsolete (or at least very limited versions of their former selves). Its not like i actually had anything against jets as they are in pre 1.0, whats not to like about being able to do a laythe roundtrip with 150 units of LF (and 200K xenon gas)?

See now, because of this thread I'm going to really REALLY miss the old aero system...... thanks guys... :P

Uh, just keep a stock version of 0.90 around. You can have as many KSP installs as you like. Just copy'n'paste the entire thing. It's within the EULA and even works with the Steam edition.

Then you can #lolaero yourself silly whenever the mood strikes.

That's the best part of KSP: Modular install. No registry. No absolute paths. No BS.

all these changes have me worried...

they should be adding things, not changing things!

i don't know about you, but i started playing ksp because it allowed you to do amazing things while being in a realistic environment.

my favorite thing to do is put huge spaceships into orbit.

i don't know what i will do after this update.

i guess you just gotta be careful what you wish for.

i just won't update passed this point.

or just do what renegrade said and make a backup of 0.90.

But it wasn't ever really stock, it was always a placeholder, what were getting in 1.0 is stock. Personally I couldn't stand the whatever it was. I'm a pilot and it felt like flying through silly string or something else equally annoying. souposphere doesn't even catch it because soup would have better handling characteristics. more like goosphere or something not gas/liquid/solid/plasma.
