A Station Editor

Recommended Posts

There is an editor building for both rockets and planes, but what about space stations and ground bases? I think that a feature that should be implemented in a future version is a tool that allows us to design and plan space stations and ground bases in the game, rather than only finding out what the thing looks like when you finish it.

The interface would have access to all the normal parts and sub-assemblies, but there would be no launch button because if you are using this editor, the thing you are planning is too large/heavy to be sent in one launch.

I don't think this interface needs its own KSC building because there isn't an opportunity to actually build the whole station at once. It could be a button off to the side that brings the user to a computery-looking interface where large objects can be designed using all the standard parts. It would also be nice if there was more camera freedom here, so every angle can be captured.

Tell me what you think in the thread if you want to give feedback or want to refine this idea. The purpose of this interface would be to make space station design easier and less susceptible to mistakes like solar panels that collide with other modules, center of mass for RCS, etc.

Behind the scenes the SPH and VAB are already the same. Only one of them defaults to a vertical orientation with radial symmetry, the other horizontal with mirror symmetry. What would a third editor/building add to the game that the others can't already?

Yeah build them in the SPH or even the VAB, then pull each section off and save as a subassembly for launching each part up individually.

The only problem comes from if the station is too big to fit, but in that case it'll likely also have too many parts to be practical.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
