heating in upper atmo?!

Recommended Posts

Ascending to orbit at 55km and 1800m/s with a ship that has the small nose parachute on the front and the octo probe controller under it, and the octo explodes from overheating? Really?! Is anyone else having problems with ascent or is it just me

how fast are you going? Are you getting heating effects during the ascent?

at what altitude does it explode?

No, I'm not seeing graphical mach or re-entry effects.

I've had the same issue. Wrapping the entire bit with the probe in a fairing fixes it, and incidentally makes the rocket more aerodynamic. In my case I had an okto on top of a capsule basically for doing rescue missions and such. After about the 5th or sixth time something exploded I decided to have a look at the debug info; what happens in that scenario is the capsule builds up a lot of heat during the earlier part of the ascent (even if there's no reentry effects) - so much so that the capsule's temperature exceeds the probe's maximum, but not its own, and then the capsule transfers heat to the probe via conduction. Eventually the probe passes its limit (which typically occurs around 55-65km) and explodes.

i'm seeing the same thing-- it usually happens with the okto probe, since its max temp is relatively low (so it splodes first). I think it might be a bug with convective heating...

Happened to me while pushing a Stayputnik. I think probe cores don't like heat very well, and there can be a lot of shock heating even without seeing the flames. If you open up a thermometer you will see it shoot up quite high at those speeds that high up too.

Fairings fixed this for me.

Standard answer: There's a mod for that :P

But yes, it should be stock. Alternatively, you can turn on the heat-shading from the debug menu.

Or better yet, turn on the debug info and use that :D; I haven't turned it off since I encountered the issue. Heat shields behave quite interestingly...

The debug menu isn't a mod, it is part of the stock game. ALT+F12 in windows will bring it up (Option+F12 for Mac).

In there is a whole bunch of tools useful for debugging from cheats to sliders. I wouldn't mess with most of it unless you know what you are doing as it can change the way the game behaves quite significantly (up to stuff like turning off gravity). That said, there is an option in there that will make it visualize how much different parts are heating up.

I'm glad to know people do that to other people and not just me... sometimes getting answers on these forums is impossible!!!!

And yes, that has happened to me too :sticktongue:
