Unity 5 and .NET Framework

Recommended Posts

Yay.

Has Squad given any indication that they would move to a more modern version of the .NET Framework?

There's a lot more that can be done with 4.x (not to mention Microsoft is actively developing and fixing 4.x, unlike 3.5).

Note, Unity doesn't use .NET, it uses Mono, which is a reimplementation of .NET for Unix-like systems. Any work Microsoft does would have to be incorporated into Mono first, although that's a lot easier now that a good chunk of .NET is open source and under permissive licensing.

Actually checking in on this from the Mono side of things, and from the latest release notes....

http://www.mono-project.com/docs/about-mono/releases/4.0.0/

It's actually on .NET 4.5. Still not absolute current .NET version (which is 4.5.2), but close enough for most of what we care about.

So this is a Unity thing then =/

Unity uses a highly customized Mono. Mono itself has gone far beyond 3.5 too, AFAIK.

I don't think it's particularly customized, but it is an ancient version that they haven't upgraded due to a licensing disagreement with Xamarin. But last I heard, they do not now have plans to upgrade to a version of Mono from this decade (which sadly isn't an exaggeration, Unity uses Mono 2.6 which was released in December 2009).

That is from times as unity 3.6 was released, ages. that is quite disanointing that they have no plans for upgrading.

Oops, that should read they do now have plans

Quote from Josh Peterson in the comments of this blog post:

Yes, an upgrade to the latest version of Mono is on the roadmap. We don’t have dates or releases to talk about yet, but it is coming.
