[0.15] Kerbal Parcel Service: Fastest delivery to KSC2 on one turbojet engine

Recommended Posts

No screens, it was so embarrassing. Took me about an hour, and I was gliding for the last half hour of that. I need to better control my cruising altitude. On the plus side, I found it was fairly simple for me to turn around on the runway and point myself directly at KSC2 without firing my engine.

Somebody needs to fly a BigTrack to KSC2 and level that terrain a bit...

Ran out of gas about halfway between the mountains and the complex and glided in for a beautiful landing only to find myself unable to stop after cresting the hill on the other side of the road to the launchpad. ;D

Flyby at 28:47, give or take.

Do you get any credit for doing it with a helicopter?

It took about 2 hours, with a primary mission of delivering a Bigtrak to the mountains near KSC1 first. If I\'d held unto it, I\'d have a MechJebb equiped Bigtrak to roam KSC2. That bird used 275kg of fuel in all, and has 325kg left, ample for a return trip!

Wow. Getting there is one thing... But getting there with enough fuel to return and to carry a useful payload is another. With a helo, no less! My hat\'s off to you, my good sir! ;D

Right on, I love the real deliveries! More cargo! 8)

I\'m still finding ways to shave time, revision C of the KPS Delivery van has 3 landing gear and can be run at full throttle the whole way, running out of fuel just at the right time to coast in for a landing. 22:13

Full album here.

Flight tips:

  • [li]Cheat on takeoff - taxi down the runway, do a U-turn, and get up to full speed before taking off (and starting the MET timer!)[/li]
[li]Fastest climb to cruising I\'ve found is to go vertical until the ramjet is at 50/200 intake power (about 7500m), then pitch gradually down to the horizon by 13,000m[/li]
[li]Cruise at 15,500m with ASAS on, using the ALT-W/S trim up/down keys to stay more or less level. You\'ll have to reset SAS (with F) and trim (with alt-X) from time to time[/li]
[li]If you\'re doing it right, you should run out of fuel just in time to dive straight down towards the VAB.[/li]

In a valiant attempt to best antbin\'s time, I trimmed down my vessel by omitting the nosecone adapter, removing the 2 tail fins, 4 small control surfaces, and one landing gear bay (total of 0.88 mass and 0.72 drag). Started with a 45 degree climb, dropped to about 20 degrees after I hit 10km, and cruised at 15.5km on max thrust through the trip. After the fuel ran out, I adjusted my heading and pitch to line up my velocity vector with KSC2 (probably should have done this earlier) and glided straight into the building. Alas, I was unable to topple antbin.

Ran out of fuel shortly after 20 minutes.
