The International Flag of Planet Earth

In Short: What a silly idea.

In Detail: I think that such a concept is pretty well gratuitous. Such an idea would make sense if we were a part of a large community/group of planets, we would need something to represent our planet, but we haven't yet discovered even another planet with sentient, complex life and societies on it, so there is no need for such an invention. And if we'd ever need one, I'd say that the UN logo on a flag would be sufficient. Also, how does does a symbol comprised of a circle of circles represent Earth or remind us to "take care of each other"? I think seeing pictures and film of average people in other places around the world and their daily lives would inspire people to care more for others than a simple flag. The flag has a detailed explanation as to how it represents Earth, but shouldn't symbols on a flag that might be seen by other beings who might have a totally different conception of language than we do be self-explaining and self-evident? In addition to the UN logo (or potentially replacing the UN logo) another flag design might just be a simplified map of the world; There would be very little, if any bickering between nations about what design to use and the flag would represent Earth very literally without any sort of incredibly well-hidden or designer-formulated symbolism that might mean something totally different to somebody else.

I think a global flag is a fantastic idea! I especially love the blue on the flag, and the design of the whole thing makes it look extremely cool. I'd proudly fly that flag on my future home.

I don't know how I feel about the Swedish "official" one. It doesn't tell me anything that it represents earth. At least put in 7 rings instead of 6 for the 7 continents.

I like the one posted by ChrisSpace much better!

Fantastic in it's simplicity!

For an alien civilisation it's a clear indication of where we're from.

If Sweden goes to Mars they can use any flag they like, if my tax dollars are paying for the majority of it, I expect the US flag on it. Imagine if some guys in the US proposed an international flag the swedes could use when they win XC skiing at the Olympics instead of their own. Wouldn't go over well.

My requirement for any non-US flag would be more than 50% of the total cost, including all NASA costs incurred since its inception. So pony up about half a trillion bucks and I think NASA should entertain the idea.

I don't think its perfect but i like the color and the way that it has only round shapes. Makes it feel natural and it somehow conveys a good intent of exploration.

And please, the American flag as the world flag Robotengineer?

Its meaningless. If a company supports a formula 1 car, they put their logo on it, commensurate with their contribution. Thankfully congress would gut NASA if they ever suggested anything like this.

Actually, Earth might need a flag or an emblem (or even coat of arms ;) ) in case we manage to colonize several other planets. As for the aliens, I don't think they would care much. Besides, a logo would be more practical since it can be cut out of rock. To last.

Now I want to see the BP logo on a propellant depot...

Interesting flag, OP. I looked up Earth Flag and an article about this flag showed up.

I'm not a fan of a democratic body that enfranchises totalitarian states, myself. I'd be fine with a flag like this being adopted by spacefaring nations on a fully cooperative mission (equal share of all costs, etc).

Unfortunantly NASA still says they will use an American flag if they get to Mars.

Well, considering that NASA's money comes from the US... I mean, if I it were to spend a ton of money to put the craft on another planet I'd like to have my face on the rover too. :)

If the mission is international... I guess having an Earth flag makes sense... Not sure.
