Minmus is a long way to go...

Well, it\'s sort of being turned into a blog, isn\'t it?

At least its not like the offtopic forum was a week ago (that was becoming a facebook page). Though I do agree with the mods, this isn\'t relevent at all and doesn\'t need to be said.

you know... this morning i discovered that of you can make it to the Mun, you can pretty much make it to Minmus with that same ship

how is that, you ask? - they\'re so far apart....

they are, but if instead of shooting straight for Minmus, you make your way towards the mun first - you can slingshot yourself to your final destination - the simple transfer of momentum between the Mun and your ship during your gravity-powered approach will boost you all the way up to higher orbits

it\'s only a matter of fine-tuning your path as you go along... get your trajectories straight, and gravity shall take you where you wanna go ::)

cheers!

You don\'t even actually have to do that. The fuel you lost getting there will be made up for when you land, being suprised that it requires minimal fuel to get to the surface.

Like this? :D

I\'ve also started parking at the Mun, then moving on to Minmus. Good practice for planetary transfers.

It\'s only about 80m/s of delta-V more in relation to a Trans-Lunar Injection.

I don\'t get why you guys are so on about having to slingshot around the Mun. Just burn the engines for an extra 2 seconds and you\'ll be more precise with plenty of velocity.

You don\'t have to, but where\'s the fun in doing something that you have done with the Mun hundreds of times?

I think the reason people get excited about slingshotting is that it\'s helpful for practising manoeuvers that will be absolutely necessary when we have other planets. In the real world, pure rocket thrust can really only get you as far as Saturn (and even then only when Earth and Saturn\'s respective orbits are at exactly the right point). You need an ungodly amount of propellant to manage it.

By contrast, if you use a few (complicated!) orbital transfers between planets, you have most of the momentum needed to get the craft where it\'s going provided by (say) Venus, followed by Mars, followed by Jupiter.

Sure, we only have one slingshot destination right now; but it\'s one more than we had before!

True dat, I think JFKerman said it best when he said,

'We choose to slingshot the mun in this decade and do these other things, not because they are easy or efficient or necessary, but because they are fun and also good practice.'
