Ultima Underworld, numero uno, top 1, best of the best.

Monkey Island

TIE Fighter

Frontier First Encounter

Baldur's Gate + expansion pack

Morrowind/Daggerfall

(probably more but these immediately leapt to mind)

None of these are online, unfortunately.

Oh man, I remember playing an old version of that hover game on, I think, Windows 95. I was so blown away by the 3D graphics :D

Morrowind (spent so many hours on this one)

Diablo 2

Rollercoaster Tycoon

Armored Core

Freelancer

Edit: I keep remembering more!

Too many to list, and I still have a DOS machine to play them on :D

How about Jetpack? here's an online remake.

Hint: for an extra retro hit, type 'bambi' (original code name for Win '95) at the first screen of that online hover game...

If I type 'IDDQD', what classic game am I cheating at?

For me no game will ever beat Resident Evil 2 (and with capcom announcing an HD remaster of Resident Evil 0, I can only hope a remake of 2 is around the corner...).

Ace Combat 4 is a very close second.

This is really hard to answer. I totally forgot at least half of them... But here are some that stayed with me (literally, I just went through my old CD stash... mostly PSOne games). (Also, how old are we talking? HL2 is more than 10 years old now...)

PSOne (my first introduction to gaming):

Metal Gear Solid (Damn, I finished that game at least 20 times, absolute masterpiece)

Gran Turismo 2

GTA II

Alien Resurrection

Collin McRae Rally 2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

Medal of Honor

Tekken

Colony Wars: Red Sun

N-Gen Racing (racing with jets... can't beat that)

PC:

Army Men series (especially Air Attack in coop with a friend, and RTS)

Abe's Exodus and Abe's Oddysee (Hello. Hello! Follow me! Okay. :D)

Command&Conquer (all of them I think... Heck, I even enjoyed C&C: Renegade)

Devil May Cry (most notably 3)

Deus Ex

Dungeon Siege

Half-Life

Heart of Darkness (I love this game so much)

Fallout I and II

Diablo 2 (never finished Hell difficulty... I should play again)

Liero (and Worms Armageddon, of course)

Age of Empires (but I have to admit, I was only running around with a bunch of photonmen or cobras :/ I sucked too much at strategy back then)

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings

Starcraft: Brood War (although I sucked and still suck at it)

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Prince of Persia (all of them)

Need for Speed: Underground (1 and 2)

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

And just a few years back I have discovered the MechWarrior games... Hot damn those are so f*cking awesome. I have read the books first, and these games were a dream come true. Words cannot express how dearly I hold these games, especially MW4: Mercs with all the mektek goodies.

As in older threads on the same topic, there is Bungie's (now free) Marathon single player Trilogy, and you can play M2 or Infinity online using your Windows, Mac or Linux box:

http://marathon.sourceforge.net

This will give you some ideas of the first one (or not):

... and the second one is lightyears beyond the first one:

If you want fun, this should be a rewarding surprise.

That would be DooM :)

Well, let's see...

Descent Freespace and Freespace 2,

TIE Fighter (tho never liked X-Wing, don't know why..)

Elite, of course, played it on my Commodore 64, still didn't get the new one tho...

Master of Orion 1 and 2

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (3 is okish, after that, waste of time)

Star Control 2

One Must Fall 2097

Pinball Fantasies

Commander Keen! Tho only 4,5 and more or less 6, Invasion of Vorticons had too MEH graphics for me, even then...

Jazz Jackrabbit

Oh, of course, Rock'n'Roll racing on SEGA Megadrive II (or whatever it is also called... Blizzard rocks!)

Which reminds me, does Starcraft count?

Supremacy (also known as Overlord) my first contact with 4X games, again on Commodore 64

Original Command and Conquer and Red Alert 1

Lots more which I cannot recall at this time...

On the topic of DooM, I feel Strife deserves a mention, as one of the first FPS/RPG hybrids, along with another masterpiece that I'm surprised hasn't turned up here: System Shock.

System Shock 2 released at the same time as Half-life, and was largely eclipsed by it, but it's available on GOG for a song and it's a truly great game. The atmosphere is phenomenal, and will have you crapping yourself as you rummage for that last clip of AP ammo, listening to the robots shuffle closer...

If you're more of an RTS player, you can't go past Total Annihilation. Epic, epic armies :)

I'm pretty sure I've played all the games on your list 11of10, besides perhaps the C64 ones... I never had one of those :(

I also fondly recall spending ages getting past the 'age check' questions in Leisure Suit Larry: Land of the lounge lizards. (the VGA version, the isometric one was awfull) A hilarious game once you get in :D

Ed: ...? there's a remake on steam. To quote: "It’s not just the funniest game you’ve ever played……it’s also the most infamous video game of all time!"

I forgot this even existed until yesterday butdamn I loved this game. What this video doesn't show is how whatever you do, everything will proceed differently. It's just a matter of trial and error, but actually going through the process is rewarding because the sequence of events plays out differently each time.

Allow me to slightly make your day.

You can find Frontier First Encounter online too, I seem to recall getting it off the official frontier.co.uk site years ago, but the page seems to have gone now. You'll find it on a few abandonware sites though if you want.

Thanks for the link. I knew about DF being released as freeware and I got my working copy of Frontier from Elite Club (I think it was). I just assumed that "online" meant an online playable verson (don't ask me how I reached that conclusion, I don't really know). I know where to get Frontier but I'm not at all sure if naming an abandonware site is ok here. Probably not so I won't.

On a side note: DF is(was?) being reworked to work on more modern systems, DaggerXL, now under the XLEngine banner.

@steve_v Well neither Elite nor Supremacy are exclusive to C-64, Elite was popular on a variety of systems, including PC/MS-DOS, with the above mentioned First Encounters being the third game in the series, and, tho buggy, a huge thing for probably everyone on this forum. One of the first games where you could actually do a gravity slingshot (or so I'm told, never tried it myself) and the only really Fiction thingy being the Hyperdrives. And of course Thargoids themselves :)

Supremacy was actually ported to C-64 from Amiga I think...

In any case, I think Supremacy is abandonware now, so you can check it out. Also, I have to add something to the list: Milennium - return to Earth.

Frontier First Encounters: ISO image downloading now...

Now to find a CDROM drive for my 486, so I can play in all it's original glory. :D

Know I've got one somewhere <rummage, rummage, CRASH, Oops, AHA!>

Pretty sure it's been years since I actually used a cd ;)

Unless I remember it wrong, Frontier runs fine in DOSBox in which you can mount CD images like ISOs, unless you really want to play it on a 486. If so: We're not worthy! :D

Or you can get the unofficial recompiled EXE that works like a charm on new windows'

http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Hires/hiresffe.html

Looks gorgeous, doesn't it?

Also, a bit off topic, but has anyone ever dabbled with editing the exe itself to change the starting ship, or some ship's capabilities? I had a detailed guide for it long time ago, don't have a clue now where I found it tho..
