Thanks all, for so warm words.

Mightily impressive craft! How long was the longest burn time?
The longest departure single burn was about 20 min, this final maneuver was divided to 4 steps (after forming high elliptical orbit with right inclination):

1. Small kick in AP for drop PE below surface

2. Long burn in prograde direction under solar rays before reach PE (rise PE above atmosphere and forming right departure angle) - ~600 m/s

3. Maximum burn on batteries only near PE (about 80 m/s)

4. Final burn after sunrise again in prograde direction - ~700 m/s

Val returned home (safely) after more then 11 years flight, detail report will be later (with only 35 units of xenon left):

Mesklin - Lots to like there but there's one thing I'm going to steal shamelessly...Having a little ion lander running on just batteries that can be recharged back at the main craft. Saves the lander having inefficient solar cells or heavy fuel cells.

Here is my report for Jool-5 minimalist trip:

Start weight: 18.821t

Route: Kerbin -> Laythe -> Pol -> Bop -> Laythe orbit -> Vall -> Tylo -> Kerbin fly-by -> Kerbin

Engines: 1 RAPIER and 2 ion

I approve you mission. (You should post some mandatory details (game version, mods etc.) about you mission according to point 16 in the entry submission rules.)

I have had a close look at all your lander and they are all feasible. It is a bit funny that all of the low mass submissions are so similar. Single rapier used for both for kerbin and Laythe assent, small ion craft for second stage on Laythe and landing on the small moons, two stage tylo lander.

I think you have improved the design a bit by having two ion engines on the small ion lander, and that those engines are the only ion engines powering the mother ship.

I am very happy that you beat my score! and gave me reason to revisit this challenge :).

managed to get the mass bellow 15t. Total number of engines on the ship and all landers: 4

Laythe landing done, xenon use on budget.

Tylo will be hard, Vall will be even harder. Not at all sure it will work. :)

Uhuuuu !!! 15t., 4 engines... Can't wait to see your mission again Nefrums !!!

Vall with ions only, or reuseable Tylo engine for Vall ?

I tried to find a Vall ion solution, but didn't found a way to do that xD

This will do Vall to and from a 25km orbit...

That's 1100 Xenon and 18/22 LF/O and 4 ions.

It is marginal but do-able. Just remember to turn off the fuel cell on landing and recharge the batteries with the PB-NUK (using timewarp helps). Take off and head to orbit as near to horizontal as you can.

@EBAO You've documented your mission very well! I don't see any obvious problems,

I assume your ISRU re-fulling was legit on Laythe. :)

The Kerbal Space Station is impressive! That would require a lot of patience to dock. I wonder how that drop tank got possessed by the Kraken, but glad it was still usable later. I like that ion-powered scanner, an elegant way to find the ore.

Overall, you took an epic Nautilus on an epic trip and made it work!

Perhaps your title should be "20 Billion Leagues Over the Sea." You'd need a Nemo Kerbin though...

Two more exceptional entries!

Mesklin, you are at the top of the Low Mass leaderboard with an incredible 18.82 tons! Just curious, how much dV could the ion lander do in a single burn before the batteries ran out?

EBAO, another impressive ISRU submission, bringing along a lab and doing lots of science, and making it harder for yourself with a life support mod!

Impressive Foxster ! Didn't tried fuel cells... excellent idea :)

I only tried with One Ion engine... not a good idea ;)

Tylo and Vall landing completed! Loots of xenon left.

Vall was indeed done with only ions.

To maximize the ion lander for Vall, I just added batteries to be able to burn about half of the xenon in a single burn and hoped for the best. And it turns out that ~1200dV at ~1.5 twr is enough for Vall. When landed I had about 90 units of electricity left in the batteries. And when back in low orbit it was almost out of xenon.

I must have screwed up something when i took the screenshot of the Ion scooter in the VAB, it has 5800 units of electricity, not 5320.

There are still some room for improvements in the build, 14t might be possible.

- How many Kerbals are on the mission? - 1

- How many launches was needed to start your mission from Kerbal? - only 1

- How much did your mission cost? - 136 876$

- Did you needed a refueling mission? - No

- Did you bring a Living Quarter (Hitch-hiker's Storage or Passenger Cabins) for the guys during the long journey? - No, it is flight for really hard women or men

- Did you bring additional stuff like satellites, rovers, etc? - No

And, WOW, Nefrums, 15t only?!, very, very cool.

Yes 600 total loaded parts at the KSS was a bit laggy, and docking did take some time. It is easier to use a transfer shuttle instead of docking two massive craft.

ISRU refueling on Laythe was as easy as anywhere as long as you were sitting on ore. Start the drills and processor, crack a few beers and wait a couple of days.

Very had to say, as the ship loses mass as the landers are discarded.

But here is the dV I used for the mother ship in my last mission, the mother ship stayed in elliptical orbit with AP close to the edge of the SOI and PE as close to the planet as posible:

LKO -> Laythe orbit: 1135dV

Laythe orbit -> Tylo orbit: 108 dV

Tylo orbit -> Vall orbit: 74 dV

Vall orbit -> Kerbin intecept: 288 dV

I redesigned the ship again...

Jool Arrow Mk8 is now in Laythe orbit. I'm getting better and better at flying the K-E-K-K-J route, this time it only took like 2 hours :huh:

The Mk7 had about 1800 units of xenon to mush so i removed 3 of the 11 tanks (2100 units) in the Mk8. This time I will not have to mush fuel :)

I made the ion scooter more aerodynamic so I could decrease LF to 80 from 120 for the Laythe lander.

I also decreased LF/OX in the first stage of the Tylo lander to 180 from 200 (It will probably still work... I think... Did not really test it... at all.. :blush:)

As the Mk7 was easy to get to LKO, I decreased the fuel for Kerbin assent a bit in the Mk8, It was barely able to reach LKO.

Like the 20t Mk5 version that I completed the challenge with last time it could not get the PE out of the atmosphere in one go and had to reenter Kerbins upper atmosphere.
