That looks great man! It's huge! What is it lifting?

Thanks! It is lifting a single Kerbodyne S3-14400 tank filled completly with fuel and oxidiser. On my first test flight i got it to escape velocity.

Very nice mate, great work!

You are good at this it seems. Any plans for the other craft?

Yes! Here is my Altair.

However when i but it inside a fairing it explodes? Does anyone have an idea why?

Nice! Was it inspired by the one I posted a while ago? It does look very similar.

The fairing issue could be anything really. Does it explode when the fairing releases or when covered?

Yes it was a mish-mash of designs from this thread, yours especialy because it looks damn great! I used like half an hour to find out what the black sides on the ascent module was :P

It explodes as soon as i load it.

Cheers mate. :)

Hmmm. What does it say when you press F3? That can give you an idea of what part failed first. It might just need more struts MOAR STRUTS!

Update on my crafts

Orion - complete

Altair - complete

Ares I - complete

Ares V - very in-complete

Srp (sev) - almost complete

(Mars) cargo lander - wip

(Mars) hab lander - wip

(mars) Mars transver vehicle - wip

Most of my problems with the (Mars) crafts are feul, stability and random explosions. Progress is slow but I'll get there.

I don't doubt it! Keep at it man, to get everything working together and accurate is one of the hardest things you can do in this game. It is worth the effort!

That's one of the reasons why I love this game!

The Cargo lander has been giving me headaches. I added ISRU, and it works. At least, it works in theory. The game keeps crashing to the point that I'm likely going to have to postpone til the next patch. Blech.

I made a helicopter instead, so I can "film" launches. All stock, naturally.

I have just performed a successful test of my aeroshell for entry descent and landing. It was super slippery nose first so entering upright worked a treat to slow it down enough to detach the fairing and deploy chutes with no damage to the lander. Phew!

I wanted to add that entering nose first with the faring resulted in either not slowing down enough to safely deploy the shells destroying the lander or simply not being able to slow down enough to stop in time and impacting the surface.

Setting my Pe at 30,000 and pointing the fairing nose up, belly first allowed me to slow down enough and safely deploy the fairing.

DTV is progressing. I think I have a universal docking port for attaching the NTR transfer stages to their various payloads as well as connecting the section of the DTV.

HR82uI0.jpg

think that it should be assembled in three launches, but I'm not entirely sure. The video is somewhat misleading, as the caption for the clip showing the MTV's launch implies that there are three launches, but we don't actually see all three components assembling, only the crew section docking to the other two.

Once I finish the DTV I'm probably going to have to hold off on finishing the landers until 1.1.3 comes out, as the soil erosion bug makes it nearly impossible to test the deployment of the rovers and rehearse surface activities. The only thing I can really test is the descent from orbit, and even that may be ruined if the erosion takes effect as soon as the lander touches down. I may revise Orion to keep it up to the standards set by others here, and possibly try building a Habitat Altair, but the Mars portion is going to take awhile.

the soil erosion bug

Is that the lander slowly moving across the surface? I get that too, it's very annoying indeed.. DTV looking good though mate. And yeah it's three lauches for the DTV and the fore section is launched with an Orion attached!

I consistently had this problem with one of my landers on Duna that had LT-1 landing struts.  But my most recent two landers which use the LT-2's don't have any problems at all.

Which landing struts are having this problem for you guys? LT-1, LT-2, or both?

LT-2 for me. It's a known issue though. How heavy is your lander that uses the LT-2s? Mine is 60-ish tonnes and on Duna it slowly creeps sideways.

I believe I'm using the LT-2. It's the larger one that swings open and has square footpads instead of round ones.

It doesn't move very much until I deploy a rover, then it starts spinning on the surface at something like 2 or 3 RPM, and I can't stop it in any way. Deploying the other rover just makes the spinning worse. The spinning also threatens to knock over the rovers, since the don't clear the side of the lander when sitting on the surface.

Oops, I already launched the fire section and it didn't have an Orion. I was planning on sending it up separately with half the crew, since I decided to send six Kerbals.

What the whole lander spins at 3rpm? Mine seems to move more from the rear but very very slowly. Yeah I think I will leave out the fore section Orion and just have two Ares 1 launches. I will have 5 crew this time.

Well... Maybe I exaggerated a little too much, after timing the spin rate it turns out to be around 0.25 RPM. It doesn't sound like much, but it's fast enough to prevent time warp and doesn't give me enough time to drive the rovers away from the lander before it gets knocked over by the spin.

This may not be the original bug that you noticed, but I think my bug is a more aggressive descendant of yours.

@pTrevTrevs & @Majorjim, On a whim, I did a quick comparison test.  I noticed that my LV-4A Duna lander was my only lander out of my inventory that had an issue with sliding across the terrain.  I thought it was perhaps a Duna terrain thing, but I realized that my LV-4 is my only lander with landing struts clipped inside another part.  I didn't think it was an issue since the decoupler that it's mounted inside is mostly "hollow" anyway. However, I tried turning the spring strength all the way down, and the suspension was still fully locked out (made me think something was amiss).  So I slid the struts further down so the suspension "mouth" was outside the collision model of the decoupler, and they performed normally with no sliding.

Not sure how you two have your landing legs configured, but you might want to play around with this if they're partially or fully clipped into another part.
