What do you think of the upcoming Windows 10 update?

Of course not. I don't install OS without first checking other people's experiences.

That annoying little icon in the system taskbar would reappear all the time so I've uninstalled the relevant updates.

If Microsoft felt the need to behave like a spamming company, I feel the need to resist that BS.

Windows 7 works like a charm. If it's working, don't fix it.

What troubles me more is the fact that though the free update can be installed "fresh" on an empty harddrive, MS says that the Win7 serial will be void after upgrading and the free license is only valid for the lifetime of the PC it has been installed - so, while Win10 is intended to be the last version (not counting/forgetting updates), as soon as your current computer has to be replaced (upgraded sufficiently enough?) Win10 will tell you to buy a new copy - at least that is what I am reading out of MS's statements. (I guess it was the perfect time for me to get a new PC and not having to worry about this for the next couple of years.)

Historically, you had to re-authenticate your copy with MS after changing 5 pieces of hardware. If MS has changed that, this is indeed worrying. Do you have a link to the statements you're referring to?

(I'll be specifically doing a hardware upgrade prior to installing 10 if this is true.)

So if you decide that Win10 is crap, you can't return to your legal copy of 7?

Yeah this is something that worries me also. I'm not going to upgrade if that is going to be confirmed. I don't like to put shackles on me voluntary.

I don't have any idea yet what drawbacks the Win10 upgrade could bring, which software won't run anymore because of incompatibilities and what other things like AppStores Microsoft tries to force upon us.

Microsoft is like every company win oriented, giving such upgrades for free is for sure very well calculated by them and they will get their money for this by other means.

I cannot find the source right now, sorry.

Funny thing is, my Win7 never asked me to do anything like that when I installed it on my new PC (only carried over the soundcard) a few days ago - I have been using the same version on its predecessor for years.

It looks really nice in my opinion, i tried out the technical preview and loved it so i'll certainly be upgrading on launch day.

You are from Nebraska. Nebraska is in the USA. Microsoft operates from the USA. I think we understand. :P

Nor I tbh, although I can't be 100% sure I've ever upgraded a number of components without doing a fresh install.

If the Microsoft "Crap, then Awesome, then repeat" operating system release law is still in effect, then I predict that it'll be well-received, unlike 8.

I still won't switch. I'll run 7 until it can no longer do what I want it to do.
