R-7 Semyorka/Sputnik 1 Replica (With launch tower)

Recommended Posts

The Sputnik 1 (Translation: Fellow Traveler Of Earth) is the first ever man-made satellite to be placed into orbit. Launched on 4 October 1957, it marked the

dawnof the Space Race - and eventually - the first Moon landing.

It was launched aboard an R-7 "Semyorka", a former ICBM converted for the task. It's debut started a long-lasting and advanced rocket family for years to come.

It's rather easy to pilot, just be careful when separating stages.

Action Groups

Not much to it, Custom1 deploys antennae of Sputnik.

Custom2 jettisons the boosters.

Err, sorry - I'm trying to figure out how to get them to separate properly.

Thanks for the feedback - I'll be sure to take that into account - I'll diagnose it as soon as I can :)

Having not flown it, it's the only negative thing I can see. The rest looks spot on!

Nice rocket, but I believe the R-7 that launched Sputnik 1, as well as the rockets that lifted Sputnik 2 and 3, didn't have an upper stage like the one you have. The example you have built seems to be more alike to the Luna 8K72 or the Vostok 8K72K rockets, which had a small upper stage for orbital insertion or trans-lunar injection.

Maybe you can adapt this lifter and make the Luna probes?

Oh sorry, I never knew :P Seeing images such as this make me believe it did have one - Once I'm back I'll get these optimized as quickly as I could.. Actually, that Luna probe is a great idea - Nothing too hard, right? :D

Thanks again for the feedback!

Needings of work-on:

1.Boosters explode when they separate. More of an aesthetic issue, really, but can be fatal and irritating. Thanks to Majorjim and Rune for pointing that out.

2. The rocket that launched Sputnik 1 didn't have an upper stage (I was mistaken this whole time!).. Ergh, I really should look up more on staging sequences. Thanks to pTrevsTrevs for pointing this out.

Got this down, release is soon!

Tell me more on what to fix and revise, I'll be sure it comes out done immediately and properly :)

EDIT: Oh, and It's a crystal-clear possibility that a Sputnik 2 and 3 will come as well ;)

Well, you pretty much got it all, for now... *suspense*

Interesting use of the fairings for the boosters.

Thanks :D It was very, very troubling trying to get them to ignite perfectly and symmetrically, or it's "Bye bye, concept." :P

We will see that as more and more tests come.. We're safe. For now.. *Another suspense*

In all seriousness, I really should research more on this :P I can't find accurate info unless I delve really, really deep through the interwebs.
