Docking of first stage with Laythe ship successful. Booster docking minor issues.

yes I had some problem with horizontal docking. but the problem went away, I'm not sure if it's because I lined up the ports better when making my craft or the fact that I now use 2 ports (which would make docking port force stronger) or the fact that I'm docking it to something that is hanging and so has some movement.

Mmmm hard to be sure whats wrong make sure your port are not off to the side on the decouplers as that could mean they are facing the wrong angle.

move the cart up to till the ports are only just touching and turn on the brakes. then raise your wheels if your using that type of wheels (if your using wheels that you can do that). I would also recommend trying 2 docking ports, see pic below (save the decoupler with the 2 docking ports on as a sub part to help you line things up.) This will making the docking force twice as string which should help and if you don't do this then even after you do dock you might not have a flyable craft as the boosters will flap around too much.

Forty Two - Now I know you are just making all this up. :wink:

Excellent job on landing a cavegal on Duna.

Those fuel ducts on docking ports open up a whole new realm of vessel design possibilities and I am glad I could help out.

Please do post your lawn creations and if you choose I have a handy thread for posting anything assembled with stock parts.

Vehicle Assembly Lawn

Your vessel seems to twist and can be resolved by using Kickbacks or Thumpers as bracing. For the Kickback fill them 2/3 full of fuel (that weight limit is such a ...) and have three or more docking ports down the side. The extra weight is compensated for because the structural support the Kickback provides reduce thrust offsets. And use the structural supports as boosters and keep them attached until in space. Even a single core Thumper and a vessel built around it using multi point connections can alleviate wobbly rockets syndrome.

To the point you had an intercept and fly-by and you should be very proud of that tough accomplishment.

P.S. My Five Rocks vessel is assembled and will test launch later this afternoon. If the payloads achieve orbit I plan on time warping to line up Duna and going for it.

The adventure to achieve Duna intercept will be without using quicksaves. The outer three Scout Rocks (probes) will lead the way and provide trajectories for the following two Rangers Rocks to plot a course from to intercept Duna.

Afraid so. Any mod that makes it easier to complete this challenge is strictly verboten. Ideally, it would be 100% stock in all cases, but we do allow mods that don't directly affect game play, such as radio chatter, lighting for filming, etc.

I did some calculations based on the biomes visited and science experiments preformed using the values from the wiki. The values on the wiki does not appear to be 100% up to date as the values from duna surface does not match the one in the second to last screenshot.

This do not include craft recovery bonuses and science from contracts.

I am not sure on the exact number of biomes visited by the plane but it was most of KSC and surrounding biomes. And I dont think i have to prove that you can get ~300 science points by flying around a bit as this challenge have been done by only doing that.

I can do a more accurate brake down when i get home and can look in the game. But atleast this is accounting for most of the science points.

Mission 3 you did 15ish goo and science Jr tests?

Oh you uses Bob's Scientist skills to reset them? Which you can do on Eva because your on Kerbin. That would be a long mission.

Dropping Science Jr at the start of your mission 2 was smart. I would of just done a mission with just the Science Jr but that because I was not going for a low mission count.

I love your mission 6 unmanned soft landing on Duna with a single launch that's hard. Not including goo or Sci Jr was a good call. Was the Minmus fly by a sling shot or just a fly by to get science? I can't do sling shots with caveman tracking.

Yes Bob was resetting the experiments on the plane. And it was a long mission, not as hard as the last though. There where crew reports and temp scans while flying as well.

The mimnus flyby on the last mission was mostly because I had accepted a minmus flyby contract. The flyby was not close to minmus so almost no slingshot effect to screw up the ejection angle. I had only the reusable science experiments for the last mission. I made about one million credits profit on the last mission mostly from the explore duna contract. With better tracking the last mission could have been done with half the dV in that ship. According to my excel sheet the last stage had ~2.3 dV and the second to last stage had ~3.5k dV and it lasted all the way to duna and half way through the capture burn.

I think I could have brought one sience jr on the mun landing, that would have been 87,5 more science from mission 5. Not sure if i would have had enough fuel to carry the extra 200 kg thou. If I had used the superior staging that I had on the last mission it might have worked.

Edit: In retrospect I should probably not had brought the chute for the duna landing. As the 100 kg chute was about 25% of the empty mass of the lander it came at a cost of more than 500 dV. It would probably been cheaper to do a powered decent on duna as the lander was only going at about 200m/s when the chute opened. But it worked out well as the lander had lots of fuel left. I estimate it to have around 900 dV left laded at duna.

Considering I can barely hit Duna with patched conics and flight planning that was thoroughly impressive. Did you do it in 1 try or did it take a couple reloads?

I think the confusion on my end was your mission to strip- mine Kerbin for science. It was pretty much undocumented, so I was like "wait... where'd all this science come from?"

We actually have a caveman in the clan who never left Kerbin, so we know that this is possible.
