Stuck Contract? Minmus flyby?

Recommended Posts

So I had a contract to take 2 tourists around. One wanted a flyby of minmus. The other wanted a suborbital trajectory of Minmus. I flew to minmus, captured, dipped suborbital, then fixed my orbit. I got a check for the suborbital but not the flyby.

The reasonable answer would be "captured is not flyby".Try to escape and return to Kerbin. After you escape Minimus SOI,you should get the "flyby requirements".

If not bad luck, the tourist can be really demanding sometimes. :sticktongue:

Sounds like a bug to me. "Flyby X", in my experience, is synonymous with "be in X's SoI".

For various contracts, the game cares about three conditions for any given celestial body:

1. Whether you are in that body's SoI.

2. Whether you have an apoapsis inside the SoI (i.e. you're not on an escape trajectory).

3. Whether you have a periapsis above the upper limit of the atmosphere (or above 0 m, for vacuum worlds).

"Flyby" requires #1, does not care about #2 or #3.

"Orbit" require #1, #2, and #3.

"Sub-orbital trajectory" requires #1 and #2, specifically requires not #3, and also requires an apoapsis above the atmosphere (if there is one).

So by definition, if you've satisfied an "orbit" contract, you should also satisfy any "flyby" contract. No idea what's going on here, sounds like a bug.

Yea I have had other "flyby"s that trigger as soon as I'm close enough. I'm not sure why this one did not. I guess my big question is how to fix? I guess I can ALT-F12 and complete the mission? But should I save that until the very end and the tourists are landed? I've never used the debug tools to fix a buggy contract.

Did you ever have your periapsis over the ground and your apoapsis outside of Minmus' SOI? I think that counts as not flying by.

If you enter Minmus' SOI on a collision trajectory, and then slow down until your apoapsis is within Minmus' SOI, and the turn so you don't crash, then you never had a "flyby" trajectory.

And yes, wait until you're landed. If the contract doesn't complete at landing, I think it's totally fair to complete it via alt-f12.
