No orbit map

Recommended Posts

So heres the challenge the one with the least time and the farthest distance wins. what i mean is the challenge is to go to where ever you want in the solar system WITHOUT the orbital map. the person with the least time till the said planet wins, if you pick a farther planet (or whatever you want i say planet to make things easier).

for example, say two people go to the moon and one makes it in 3:59 <--- (i know its not possible its just an example.) and another in 5:43. obviously the one who made it in 3:59 wins because 3:59 is shorter then 5:43 BUT say another person gos to minmus then they win regardless of the time because its farther away. get it? good, now how to win.

the challenge will end next monday at 12:00 pm, dont be late! i need video proof (use met time). ok so get out there and win the challenge!

Is Ike farther than Duna?

I'd say yes, seeing as you can't get to one without first going to the other. It'd be weird to be penalized for hitting Ike as well as Duna. Similarly, the Sun would be 3rd in the list.

I won't be participating in this. I can get to Mun and probably could nab Minmus with enough tries or fuel, and obviously Sun would be simple (in fact, maybe it should be lowest on the list, as it's easier than hitting Mun or Minmus) but anything after that? No thanks. :D

I was going to go to Duna, but if I can't speed up the video it will take me a few months to record the mission, which is past the deadline. So I guess I'm out :(

...but seriously, CV, I see what you're trying to do with this challenge and it's interesting, but it's really not practical to enforce a rule like "no peeking at the orbit map". I'm wracking my brain to come up with a workable set of rules but I'm not having any luck.

Have you tried doing this yet yourself? That's really the best way to work all the bugs out of the rules and make a challenge lots of people will want to try. I do think you're on to something here--good luck!

Problems:

In a challenge like this, time shouldn't matter, and especially should not have a stopping point.

For any one mission there are essentially only two sane amounts of time, Hohmann Transfer Time and Hohman Overshoot Time (where your apoapsis is above the target, and thus it takes a bit more time.), starting from Low Kerbin Orbit. It can be decreased slightly if you launch directly into rendezvous orbit. Then there is another mission that would be insane past Mun or Minmus, and it is completely based upon how much delta-v and accelleration the ship has. Brachistrone transfers are essentially point-and-click orbits. You keep accelerating halfway, then turn the other was any slow down. The transfer time is based upon how quickly your rocket accelerates and if it has to shutdown its engine partway to conserve Delta-V.

It would be really cool to see someone do an Eve flyby or orbit without using the map view. They'd probably need DistantObjectEnhancement so they could see it from a distance. Several people have gone to Mun and Minmus without map view, take Abyssal Lurker's example for his Old School series. (By now, THAT series is really old school, but you get the picture. No map view. Each are done in 0.14 and 0.15 respectively, but are simulating 0.8.)

No visual enhancement necessary. Use kerbol to find your phase angle reference then it is just some math, geometry and transfer window tables to hit eloo. It would be the most boring video ever launch into a 71x71 get the high noon point visually. an hour doing math to calculate orbit and time to burn and amount to burn. No idea how to do adjustment burns so I would probably just quick save and reload until I hit it first try.
