Greatly speed up KSP for everyone with weak computers!

Recommended Posts

Here, try the attached settings.cfg file. I\'ve added a new 'Very Low' terrain setting that\'ll run at around the same speed as 0.14.4. It\'ll still look decent, and it\'s actually the same as the normal 'Low' setting, with the exception that now now the water is a much lower detail. Be warned - it\'ll bring back the bug in 0.14.4 that meant the water didn\'t line up properly with it\'s visuals.

I\'d like to note; this doesn\'t actually lower detail settings. It simply adds another option, with lower water detail settings; the 'Low', 'Default' and 'High' option are still there.

Sorry to sound like a complete noob, But when I save the file and try and open it, It says windows cannot open this file, And it asks me to check the web or go through my computer for a program to open it, Help?

You don\'t need to open it. Go into your KSP folder, delete your settings.cfg file, and replace it with this one. If you do want to have a look at it, (or edit any other .cfg files,) you can just open it with notepad.

Thank you so much for this Mr_Orion, you are a star :)

Kryten, this file should overwrite the existing settings.cfg, good job recommending Notepad though, It is important that players do not edit that file with Wordpad, as Wordpad is known to damage persistence and craft files, it may mess with CFG files as well.

No problem, it\'s my personal solution to the lag I experience. Really, the person who should be congratulated is is Mu, for making the terrain options so versatile!

My PC has an old Nvidea 5700 LE with 256 meg of ram. The altimeter was all over the place, fluctuating wildly during liftoff making the game hard to play. Many Kerbals lost their lives. Using this settings.cfg file fixed this problem. The altimeter now keeps up during liftoff. Thanks everyone! This makes the game so much more playable for me.

Word of advice. I try to never overwrite files. Change the the name of the original file to settings.cfg.old

I also have a bit of advice for speeding up KSP. If you have 2 or more gigs of RAM, try RAMDisk. It really helps. A lot of the game\'s lag is loading Kerbin into memory and this speeds up the game a LOT.

Do you mean at first load or in-game? I wasn\'t aware the disk was being accessed during flight.

Downloaded, started, doesn\'t seem to do anything for me.

You would have to create a RAMdisk partition then copy your KSP folder into it (also you would have to do this every time you restart your computer as RAM is volatile memory that is erased when power is out.

Also with anything less than 4 GB or RAM, this would be stupid (my modded KSP folder is currently 1 GB in size).

Don\'t double post. It\'s unnecessary and irritating.

As to your problem... well, it is difficult to say. If it is this fix that caused it, I can only assume that there\'s something odd going on with your computer. To get back to how it was before, change the slider in the graphics settings screen to 'Low' or higher.

But I\'m not sure how lowering the detail would possibly make it lag more.

Ok, sorry, but I don\'t know either. When I first started playing, it was super laggy. After a while, it started getting faster. Now after I installed the cfg it went back to super laggy.

  • 1 month later...

Is the settings file attached to the original post still usable in 0.16, or will it need updating?

And any other suggestions for tweaks? I\'m not quite sure what most of the settings in the graphics screen do, so I feel like one of the dimmer Kerbonauts when attempting to adjust them myself.
