(WIP) The Martian Rockets

Recommended Posts

He probably doesn't know about Delta, Titan, etc...

I am gonna go out on a limb and say that Ridley Scott certainly knows about those rockets. It comes down to budget. Editing and creating CG near future rockets would have cost an incessant amount of money and could have possible diverted money away from other parts of the movie worthy of proper attention. Now to us who are huge rocket and launch vehicle fans we are gonna notice that IMMEDIATELY. However the launch vehicle doesn't matter, the payload is what matters. So it is unfortunate that they missed an opportunity to create near future launchers but now you guys have an opportunity to do it.

Yeah, I emailed Andy Weir linking to this thread.

Also they were even lazy for the payload, as Iris and Taiyang Shen both looked like fat Cygnus/PMM mashups even though Iris was meant to be a reentry vehicle.

I really wouldn't call them lazy.... There are such things as aeroshells.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse but with hundreds of people working on a film that cost 108 million dollars to make; NASA employees working in tandem with filmmakers; scores of engineers, scientists and nerds flocking to read/see the story - I don't think anybody making the film got lazy. More often than not, there's good reasons for that kind of stuff. Remember they had to build a probe in a short time (I don't recall exactly. A couple months?), story-wise, JPL would probably try to use whatever was on hand and re-purpose it, including a Cygnus probe.

Sorry for the hi-jack!
