Devs, forums and announcing...

There is only one person (or group of persons) that can stop this endless discussion once and for all. We all know who can do it and we all know the only possible answer: make kerbalspaceprogram.com THE source for any and all news. Get it out there first, then spread it across other media.

To be honest, the forums isn't the king of all KSP boards. There's Facebook, Twitter, their Tumblr, and similar (Which I'm honestly pretty sure people read more) and not to mention reddit.

But then again, people will complain. We have a community thread for news posted on other sites already.. :P

I know we're beating the dead Equine here, but it still baffles me. We're not asking to limit Squads PR to just the forums, just to post here first. If that just means Opening this browser window first, that's cool. Then immediately post everywhere else. These are the official forums, we're the main customer base (I'd hope), we deserve at least that much.

And this is EXACTLY the problem. It isn't. But is should be!

And please, not this debate again.
can we stop with this thread before it gets too obnoxious?

I would rather we had a thread about the topic here in the Kerbal Network where such discussion belongs instead of derailing every thread showing new information with it. Not going to close this as long as the discussion remains civil and non-insulting.

The thread is mainly about the devs announcing news about KSP in reddit instead of the Forums first, which has been debated and beaten so hard already.

As people pointed out, we didn't announce this on Reddit, but rather on Squadcast. There's a difference there because KSPTV, like the forums, Facebook and Twitter for example, are official channels. It was picked up from Squadcast (or Twitter) and posted to Reddit by someone from the community.

i am too all for discussing it maturely and calmly but as past experience shows it wont be long before these kind of threads derail. you guys moved it to the KN which dosnt get as much attention and thus it wont derail but also wont get the attention this matter deserves

This matter has already gotten the attention it deserves. Multiple times. Whenever this matter gets the "attention it deserves", I find myself doing a lot more moderating, which I don't really enjoy.

It's beating a dead horse now, and I hope everyone will have the good sense to drop it.

When squad posts updates here first AND treats the forums as the staging grounds for announcements it will go away. You would not expect updates on captain america civil war to be first posted here would you? No. So why cant we expect ksp updates here first THEN on squadcast and other outlets? Thats what has us upset, updating here by the devs seems like an after thought if it ever is a thought.

Squadcast is "live" at a time that is not convenient for the entire community. What is puzzling is why Squadcast announcements aren't uploaded to the forum right after the Squadcast.

DISCLOSURE: I work for a marketing department. Our CEO holds this weekly update webcast for the staff. We have an excerpt with slides and everything on the intranet site within an hour after the webcast. It's not that hard.

Twitch also saves all broadcasts for two weeks, you can view them by going to the KSPTV profile. The latest Squadcast is available at http://www.twitch.tv/ksptv/v/15572060 :)

Kasper I honestly think the point is being grossly missed here. These forums are the official forums for this game. I do not think any of us are asking anything out of the ordinary. In fact what we are asking is basic common sense if you want my brutal honesty. We feel that seeing that forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com is the official forum that it gets treated as the first source of information not the last source. When users have to go dig things off facebook or twitter or reddit or any other external source we feel neglected or worse.

One would not say expect to hear about say Captain America Civil War production details here instead of Marvels site being posted to last. All we ask Kasper is that we see the updates here first or at the least same time as the rest of the web. Thank you.

The grossly missed point here is that this forum is for fans to discuss the game, to share experiences, and for the devs to mingle with the players which Felipe (HarvesteR) and others do when time permits, feel free to check his post history.

This forum has never been touted as the first port of call for news of KSP's development, even when Felipe and others had the time to be more active here their posts were more technical rather than being actual news, as both the development team and scale of KSP was much smaller.

So you're asking for these forums to be something they have never been, when better mediums exist for the content you deem should be here first, for example the squad casts, they are a video format which is recorded at the time of transmission which the forum is completely unsuited to hosting, instead when the streams are running they are linked here in a banner on the main forum page for anyone to click if they choose to, the times of the streams are made avialable so complaining that this is not on the forum is just being obstinate.

Also, Squad is known to use Twitter for breaking news, Twitter is a widely known and widely used medium for short news items, not only by Squad but by many others, so with this knowledge it should not be unexpected that KSP fans would follow the Twitter feed to stay up to date with new developments.

Complaining about the format or delivery of the news detracts from the fact that there is news, development continues and new content is being developed, that really should be your focus instead of what avenue the news arrived by, it is the content that is important.

There is an unfortunate belief that repetition will result in change, when in actuality it causes others to dismiss or tune out the endless refrain, defeating the objective of the complainant.

But there's no answer to "How can we make Squad post all news on the Forum first?" because the forum isn't suitable for most news, only for links to news in other formats on other sites, other than "We can't".

You know news is often posted elsewhere first, you know where it is, you know what day is most likely to to have news, these sources are only a click or two away, you are not being asked to travel to the other side of the world to find them.

And Squad does post news here, usually in the form of the weekly devnotes, but this is glossed over when any news is posted elsewhere, or the format and style of the news is argued over, completely ignoring the content, so you have to ask is there any wonder why more news isn't posted here when the times Squad does post news are dismissed because the reader doesn't like the font or the layout?

The KSP forum is not a news site, this is a forum, so add some bookmarks to your browser and stop thinking that everything has to be here ;)

Im speechless sal. Words fail me. Not everyone uses nor can be expected to use social media sal. Also squad casts are not always conveniently timed for people.

I like how this does come up often and still nothing ever changes. If you want actual KSP info you are better off joining le reddit.

What is most surprising to me is when you Google "KSP", as a prospective customer might, the first page of results is:

-The official site

-The forums

-The official Twitter

-The Steam page

-Curse blah blah

-Wikipedia

-PC Gamer's Review of KSP

-The official Tumblr

-The official Youtube

-KerbalEDU

Yet they are seemingly most connected on that reedit site, and it's not a page one link. Maybe my search history/Googles algorithms are screwing things up, anyone confirm? How does Google dictate the result order?

Nice edit.

Squad can't cater to every individual, that's asking a lot, also there is a catch-up feature on Twitch.

Also, r4pt0r, please see the Filter bubble.

As I said earlier the forums are one of our official channels, and not the only one. Sal_vager touched on this above, but some content is really suited for specific channel: a new screenshot can very easily be shown on Squadcast, and then be shared in a Tweet. Creating an announcement for that one image on the forum seems... overkill to me. I think there you'd have a more legitimate point if not all information regarding development could be found on the forums perhaps, but I can be confident that if I post an image to Twitter (for example, as in this case), it always finds its way to the forums and spawn a lively discussion. That process is not dependent on us actively placing the content here. I also think that it's nice that anyone could potentially have a nice scoop on the forums, and start a successful / popular thread. We're very much aware of the development discussions on the forums, in this case for example Roverdude read and replied to the thread that discusses the dish, and devs often reply to the Devnote Tuesday threads as well.

Of course, the forums are more suitable for sharing certain types of development updates than social media or Squadcast as well: look at the long devblogs HarvesteR sometimes writes, or lately the more in-depth information regarding update 1.1. These announcements are often in a format that can't be compressed into a Tweet or Facebook post, and sometimes not even into a Tumblr blogpost.

Finally, nobody is forcing you to use social media; it's your choice to use them, or not to use them. I understand it would perhaps be easier for someone with your convictions if we posted all information here, but ultimately the question is (why) should we accommodate everyone's personal preferences?

~~~~ULTRA-EXTREME-SNIP~~~~~~
All of this. Well said.
To be honest, less news would make their way to everyone if it was all posted on the forums first. It may be the official forums, but they also have a Facebook page, Twitter, Tumblr, everything else. I'm pretty sure that there are more people checking Facebook first rather than the forums for their news. If Squad wants their news spread differently, then so be it. It's their game..
If you want news, you can go there and check. They're not obligated to bring the news to you.
  • 3 weeks later...
I find myself slightly unnerved by todays dev notes. One of the devs may have some pics to share in the near future which is awesome, who wouldnt want a 1.1 sneak peak? Problem is they said it would be over twitter. Like a lot of folks i dont use social media. Why not post here too?
I am certain any pics will make it to the forum one way or the other.
