May i suggest another idea? Warp ring that the shuttle can dock to in orbit (star wars reference)

Yeah! May be more efficient than launching it with shuttle, but can be used by shuttle!

Having SpaceHab as a payload, even though similar to Spacelab, would be cool. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission payload from STS-99 is also another cool one.

The Orbiter Boom Sensor System would be a cool Canadarm addition. Thats the only extension I know of.

ok, here's teh picture. it was created during STS-51-D to try and activate a rogue communications satellite. the satellite never activated through this method, but it is still an interesting attachment nonetheless.

There's a stock-like mod for the X-1 on Kerbalstuff if I'm not mistaken. Unless what your asking for is the non-stock version...
