What's the deal with the player started defense/aerospace/etc companies?

Hi all, new addict to KSP. Been playing about a week and have no clue what I'm doing yet but I've managed to get into orbit with a few downloaded crafts and I'm a bit hooked.

Anyway, I was curious about the 'companies' I've seen on here. Why are people doing these? Is it just roleplaying? Is there some real world aspect or benefit I'm missing or is just a fun way for people to personalize and share their creations?

I'm not criticizing. To be honest if I had the slightest clue how to make crafts, I'd be doing the same (bit of a serial entrepreneur in real life!). I'm more into the marketing and I love some of the 'companies' I've seen on here!

Either way, hope you all are having a great weekend, see ya in orbit.

Welcome aboard!

Nope, the companies are just for roleplay. I really don't know why a majority of the forums create these fake companies and take it so damn seriously though. What pisses me off the most is when they make a rocket or plane then call it a "replica" even though it has obvious design differences, and they excessively pride themselves when they build with stock parts. I honestly don't care though, because I never go on the spacecraft exchange.

Gosh... way to burst a bubble.

Companies give you a different sense of involvement and are actually quite fun, once you get into it.

I understand on a mental level what the companies do and are for. I still don't understand their purpose for existing. I also don't understand when they're "hiring" or whatnot.

Granted I spend roughly 0% (+/- a couple probably) in the Spacecraft Exchange, and never download anything from there, so I do not seem to be the target audience.

Interesting! I get it. I'd be lying if I said I've never fantasized about living in a world where I owned some sort've space company. I was really impressed with some of the ones I've seen on here - and thanks for all the replies and the welcomes! I'm a single Dad and have an 8yo daughter and we both get a kick out of this game. It's a little difficult for her but fun building model rockets and planes and then launching them off. She says I'm addicted and might be a little right on that. I don't play games often but this one has me hooked. I hope it's one that continues to grow and be supported - the community is certainly awesome! I get lost for hours reading some of these threads. :)
