Gear engine thingy

Recommended Posts

I trying to build something similar, a mock up of the F-35b, but my engine is still too weak for gearing so far. Is this going form part of a helicopter by any chance?

I am hoping to make a double rotor helicopter at some point with this. There are lots of uses for a double ended bearing system.

Yeah, the large separators, they are the best part you can use for a very smooth running bearing, but they are quite large... :\ The second best being the structural fuselages like you have in the later pics.

IMO, for gear teeth, I find the white "small hardpoints" to be the best ones. They do not hang up or bind easily, and only slip every once in a while if the bearing has too much play in it. I've gotten them spinning at some pretty high RPM's without failure, even making a syncro helicopter(syncropter) using them to keep the crossing blades mostly in sequence. It was not completely reliable due to the bearings having too much play in them.

Ah yes, I remember your helicopter! I will definitely explore using those white radial hardpoints for teeth in the future.

Fairings make decent bearings too

This I hadn't thought of! I'm loathed to use the smaller decouplers for bearings as I didn't find them strong enough so this is a good alternative. Thanks.

So if someone manages a crankshaft, Kerbal Absolutely-enormous-8-billion-part-internal-combustion-engine Program?

I have some good ideas on how to make an ICE however I think it would be purely decorative, i.e. the axle would end up moving the pistons up and down. I'll see what I can come up with...

I think I'm getting somewhere, lol!

I did try using the round 8 tanks for rings but no luck, they fall straight of the shaft. I think the collision model for them is a disk rather than a ring.

Wouldn't it be easier/more efficient to use tipjets instead of turbines to spin the shaft? Part count would probably be better, I guess.

Has anyone figured out an ignition system for a functional ICE yet? I'd imagine KoS could do it which might be good for testing/working out most efficient timings etc. but in full stock? Maybe a plate connected to the crankshaft could block thrust from the engines when the piston is on the downstroke, but this wouldn't really count as an ignition system IMO. It would let you use jet's instead of rockets though. If fuel lines could be blocked by objects in the way you could make it so fuel is cut off at times in the cycle, but I don't think they do work like that. I get the idea there might be some way to use control surfaces/airbrakes in an ingnition system since they're about the only thing that can move without action groups, but how I don't know. Also, there is a very good chance everything I just typed is a complete load of rubbish.

Don't bother. Here it is.

Yeah but I invented the turboshaft/turboshaft because I didn't like the idea of rockets/jets on wingtips. And so does the rest of the world.

they are simpler to build but you cannot directly control the thrust and you also increase the weight of the shaft you are trying to spin slowing it. Also the part count is the same in my experience.

I meant a place where we discuss all things mechanical in ksp not just ice or turboprops. Im working my way though various bearings, gear types, turbine set-ups etc and would like a place where we could all get together to chat. There definitely is a demand for it and I think if you started one it would get more attention than if I made it.

KHTRE a Russian ksp builder already made an ice. Have a look on youtube. I'll post a link when I get home.

1) I'm not russian:mad: I'm Ukrainian.

2) Yep, I have an ICE and a gearbox. I've also made a car, but the engine is not powerful enough to move it.
