Orbital hovering challenge

Recommended Posts

The goal of this challenge is to take any vehicle, fly it to space and to hover there with an orbital velocity of 0. The altitude limits are from 70000m to 100000m. There is nothing more to say about this, so have fun.

.... fly it to space and to hover there with an orbital velocity of 0. .....

I have a deep space probe hanging out there at about 25x Eeloo orbital distance, if I take it to zero orbital velocity it takes 12 minutes to get up to 1m/s due to sun's gravity.

Does that count?

Sure, I think that does.

[Edit]

Nevermind, that does not count. You have to be truly hovering, not slowly falling.

Trying this out. I got pretty close to it at the first try while I was figuring out how I need to do it.

Edit: I know I'm 1k km above Kerbin, but I was able to do it with this one. I didn't have the precision to stay at 0, but I was flipping between 0.1m/s on either side.

I tried to do it further down closer to the atmosphere, like at the border of space and while I was able to get it down to single digits, I couldn't quite get it to zero.

You were in surface mode, meaning that you still had a horizontal velocity. Sorry about that.

Depends what you mean by horizontal velocity and hovering

Compared to kerbins surface he ddidn't have any velocity. And IMO that's much better definition of hovering than havinh zero orbital velocity...

The contest specifically said orbital velocity. Doesn't matter which you feel is better, in this contest surface velocity is incorrect, and only an orbital velocity of 0 counts.

5th Horseman is correct. From Kerbin's reference frame, your ships should be literally standing still in Kerbins SOI. Yes,smjjames, your attempt is disqualified. Sorry.

Because I still had horizontial movement? I tried to kill horizontial velocity, but it just kept increasing again, I thought that was just due to Kerbin rotating under me.

Also, you have yet to produce your entry.

Edit: Also, could you explain further by posting your entry and explaining how mine is disqualified? The answers to that question is the kind of thing that should have been in the challenge OP from the start.

Sorry about the fact that I do not have an entry. I will start trying to do the challenge. The problem is that I got distracted and installed RSS, and am currently too lazy to uninstall it (see comment #4 for the reason why). I can, however, try to show you an example of what it should look like (with infinite fuel, as the challenge will probably be too hard to do in RSS). That is, of course, after I learn how to post game screenshots on the forum. Also, the screenshot you took in comment #11 was exactly what the completed challenge should look like (Orbital speed=0). Just try keeping that speed for a much longer time to actually complete it. Anything more than 0m/s (that includes 0.1m\s) is not allowed.

Easy enough, just upload to an image hosting place of your choice.

Okay then. I was doing it at 1k km to figure out how to do it and then decided to try at a lower altitude. As I said, I was having problems with the precision since even though I could get it to the 0 point, I kept having to adjust it as it went into 0.1 on either side.
