perfectly symetrical Shuttle suddenly starts to spin

Recommended Posts

My shuttle was fine.

It just was difficult to land when returning from orbit due to a low liftrating.

So i added two more wings.

As a result the shuttel starts to spin on ascend. The areo display (F12) shows long lightblue lines to the right from nearly every part now.

I removed the new pair of wings again, so it is the same as before, but the lines still show up every launch and it starts spinning.

Is this a Bug? Is there a way to recover my working version of the shuttle?

Don't rely on the aero overlay lines, they don't tell the truth.

Please post pics of the craft to imgur and upload the craft file to a file share site and post the links here.

If you want to see accurate aero data, open the debug menu with alt+F12 and enable aero data in the action menus, it's in the physics tab.

The trick is to build the orbiter in the SPH and then test it's flying characteristics when the tanks are empty and without payload. If your orbiter does fly in a stable manner, you can then go ahead and think about launching it into orbit with a payload.

The launcher needs to be stable aswell. That means you need the center of mass infront of center of lift. Often that requires to put the actual orbiter pretty far down the stack because of all the wing surface.

What do you mean by spinning? Is ist pitching or rolling?

Blue arrows are lift forces they should be on all parts that contribute to lift in the current situation. That includes bodylift from the tanks, ect.

I'd rather suggest that you strut the wings and engines to the fuselage. Many, many seemingly wierd aerodynamic problems are easily solved by rigidity.

Actually, if you're carrying anything (in a bay or so), make sure that is rigid too. That's caught me out more than once.

Well, struts produce a fair amount of drag. Might not be a good idea for ascent.

There was also a strange bug, where mirror symmetry would sometimes place more then two parts. Sometimes it would place one wing on the right side and two or more wings clipped together on the other side. The way to spot it was that one wing would be significantly brighter in color.

The solution was to hit Shift+X until symmetry was off and then hit X again to turn on two times symmetry, then place the part again.
