Storage Bay Question.

Recommended Posts

So my question is simple.

Would it be possible to use the 1.25mm storage bay and build your own custom command pod that preferably could store more than 3 Kerbals?

Yes and no.

3 is pushing it. I've never tried but clipping may be a problem. Also, the 1.25m (not mm. That's TINY ;)) bay is small even for 1 Kerbal. Do they even fit in there?

Also, you won't get the benefits of a command pod. Most notably, it won't store science nor will it refill suit RCS packs. Also, no reaction wheels. Having chairs will give you control, at least, though "forward" will be whichever way they're facing.

And finally, command pods always weigh the same regardless of if they have passengers or not. Your custom-made command pod won't.

I did it yesterday (rescuing a pair of kerbals from minmus on a 64k playthrough). It works, but it's tight and really weird stuff can happen. I've had kerbals auto-eject when the bay opens, and once I had a kerbal die from getting out of the chair. If you do do this, I strongly advise against putting anything else in the bay with them. If you want guarantees of safety, put them somewhere else.

And,,, the IVA would really suck.

Here's an example, the 1.25m bay really only fits one Kerbal, facing forward. I also have a reaction wheel, probe core, and a few batteries and small science experiments in there but it's pushing it. The Kerbal's helmet is touching the probe core and the back side of the container. The 2.5m container fits 6 in seats without any clipping plus a probe core and fuel enough to de-orbit it. I've used them with a heat shield and some ant engines and parachutes as escape pods for a station (but no picture sorry).

Yes one kerbal works nice if the seat is correctly place, 3 i so much, I would use 3 bays for them.

Now the 2.5 meter one can hold plenty+ probe core, reaction wheel, rcs and so on.

You can fit two, but definitely not three...unless you go the serious clipping route.

Here's a picture from one of my challenges. This is a recovery vehicle (unnecessary for the challenge itself), so I made it very minimalist. You can see in the upper right how the two kerbals fit in. I recommend placing command chairs inside to prevent the kerbals from bouncing around, slipping out during time warp, and generally summoning the kraken. On occasion, it still quivers when the doors are closed, but in general works well.

You can place two command chairs with radial symmetry and rotate them so the head end of the seat points inward to the bay. They will naturally snap the the vertical midpoint of the bay opening with some fiddling, but you'll have to use the offset gizmo to sink them inward slightly horizontal to prevent the kerbals/chairs from clipping through the doors (which invites bad things for service bays).

Cheers,

~Claw
