Also, why was Hermes so large, especially in the 0G section? That was empty corridor, for no reason!

Well they were potato plants. The production team had a potato farm with potato pants in all stages of growth to use on set. And the Hermes was so big simply because it looked good. Blame Fox.

Engineering requirements? Counter balance/weight for the engines? Spacing between modules (e.g. solar cells and rotating crew module)?

But: Thinking back they should have had more trouble transfering from the central tube into the rotating "arms" of the ring section, no?

Even if the part of the corridor was moving as well.
