One of our local forum users reported seeing these large unusual landscape when flying in career mode, and after quickload, they aren't there anymore.

New easter egg, or just a texture disorder?

(sorry for my poor english)

He is talking about the heightmap, which technically is a texture.

What I meant is that if it is a texture problem instead of an easter egg, the edge of the wierd mountains (both height and texture) couldn't be so smooth.

I believe the terrain engine interpolates between adjacent heights, smoothing them, and applies textures based on slope and altitude. The pictured effect could be caused entirely by a glitchy heightmap.

^What RIC said, because Kerbal Terrain System's craters are textured properly.

Creepy!

And curious that noone else saw them until now?

Yes... Even the post sender himself didn't see it twice.

Well... That is a possibility... I am waiting for the post sender's future details and maybe other people's reply.

The planet terrains work by having first a base heightmap which covers large scale details. Then there's a small scale procedural noise map that's overlain on top of that, for smaller scale details. This is certainly some sort of weird fluke going on with the terrain engine, not any sort of "texture glitch". It's nothing to do with textures, I can tell that much. Something made the terrain mesh generator spew, for some reason.

Well, after I reached there and flying around I can almost confirm that it is a bug on heightmap, or maybe the ground texture is actually being set to change with the heightmap.

Personaly, I think we can hardly see it agiain:rolleyes:

It's obviously the spinal vertebrae* of the ProtoKraken, which was so vast that it's decaying bones left a mountain range sized fossil behind. It's the most rational explanation.

*Yes, Krakens are the only invertebrates to have spines. Little known fact.

As Nova actually worked with the game's code, I'm pretty sure this is the correct answer :P
