the SPACE-SHUTTLE

my attempt to to build something single-staged went out better than expected so i decided to share my creation.

Single Stage flight to Laythe, the Kraken, Duna and back to Kerbin.

V1.04 / no mods

428 tons / 114 parts

craft-file:http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=09620957301674332547

1-toggle Mammoth

2-toggle Nuke

3-toggle Vernor Rcs

4-open/close cargo bay

5-toggle drill

6-toggle steering rear Wheels

7-deploy chutes

8-toggle rearlights

9-toggle cockpitlights/cargobaylights

- rear X200-8 tanks for a last reserve - toggle manually

just make sure you burned all the fuel except for the reserve, before attempting a glide-landing, otherwise the craft will come down too steep.

i furthermore suggest to make use of RCS only if really needed, cause it wastes a lot of the good fuel.

especially for the trip Kerbin/Minimus and Laythe/Bob the fuel is calculated very concise, so make use of the DV wisely !

Lifting off from Laythe it was very helpful (maybe even necessary) to keep both foremost MK3 adapters

emptied, just shut them off before the refueling procedure. i had some issues when trying to push that nose upwards.

and one last thing : the ISRU is placed in the cargobay, where it is a little bit hard to catch the right spot to click, but i know you'll make it ! (i cut those seqs out of the video cause they didnt look very presenting :) )

& thank you all for great amount of feedback !

Good job man. Are those heatshields really needed though? They are very heavy.

Also, the TWR looks huge. You will save some dv by launching it upright.

Also, also, you can burn to Duna from an elliptical orbit out near Minmus for only an extra 130ish m/s dv. No need to land on Minmus.

I really enjoyed the video.

very awesome, compact design. essentially a single stage to minmus SSTM ship. Once anyone can make an SSTM, then it can go almost anywhere.

its got just enough fuel to make it to minimus . refueling there makes it possible to advance and land on most of the existing surfaces

i havent tried reentry without em, but during Kerbin reentry many of the heatbars went to nearly full red status and i doubt removing em would be very healthy.

and TWR is just alright to make it to minimus even when launching it horizontal, so i think its good as it is.

& thank you !!!

You are the first Jebediah Status Kerbonaut I ever seen with Rocketeer Status, I don't mind helping with that!! REP not a problem great craft, can't wait to try it out!

i wouldnt mind seeing my status rise :) and thanks !!

I'm always amazed at the creativity of people's designs. Nice craft.

I downloaded your file and started to disassemble it. I see a lot of part clipping. In absolutely no way am I saying that is bad, but it does raise a question: how much part clipping is acceptable? I have many designs that use a significant amount of part clipping, but I've always been hesitant to share them here because people seem to get all uppity when it comes to clipping. Since the introduction of the clipping tool, it's become more acceptable, but only to a certain degree. When you get to the point of clipping engines into fuel tanks, and then clipping that assembly through another engine, I feel like a lot of people would throw up their hands in disgust and say "that's not realistic! you've gone too far!"

Personally, I found your design very cool and I definitely learned a few new building tricks and techniques from breaking it down. Thank you for sharing (and I've sent some rep your way).

thank you !

indeed the craft is pushing clipping to the limit. its a compromise. if i had build it avoiding clipping, it would probably look a little bit uglier :)

for me, as long as there are no graphical disturbances, (and it flies !!!) clipping is alright.

The ship is almost as awesome as the way you ended the video.

how much part clipping is acceptable?

Since this is a single player game, there's a real easy answer to that: however much you deem acceptable. In your particular case. There's no "right" way to play KSP!

Rune. Kerbal indeed!

Not to hijack the thread but to encourage the OP:

I think it all comes down to intent. I view clipping unlike parts together as a form of miniaturization which is perfectly acceptable due the lack of stock parts. But clipping full fuel tanks inside full fuel tanks, is where I suppose most would draw the line since logically it would mean that the intent of such an engineer would be to extend the range of the craft unnaturally. As long as the intent is to extend range unnaturally, most people would view it as a cheaty craft. But clipping parts of tanks into others to maintain aesthetics, since aesthics is the intent, most people would be fine with it. Even more people would be fine with it if such an engineer would compensate the clipping with emptying out clipped tanks accordingly.

This craft does a beautiful job of keeping aesthetics without appearing cheaty.

That's my observation. Well done!

You should man, at least with the ablator removed. It really will save you a lot of weight.

Still I would like too see this humongous thingy from the ending of your video fly :D

Unfortunately, it was a prototype and the kerbengineers have abused the construction manuals for a game of yahtzee & now they are unreadable... :)

Congrats Guz! Your Shuttle made it onto my Spacecraft Friday Edition!

aprechiated , thanks !!

Great craft! (Sent some rep :P)

And a very nice video! I laught almost to my death, looking at the ending: after so much mileage thru the whole Kerbol System, and so much perils, it ends... in a BIG "Happy landend" WELCOME BACK firework! (Glad you have you kerbonauts already on the ground) (No more rep for you, for this... but just because I already repped for the craft and the forum does nont allow me to double the amount ;) )

Clipping is "fair" up untill KSP does not "explode", and you like the creation.

I saw the best "stock replicas" using clipping over everything I ever created, and be praised...

I saw geniuses use of clipping , and the fourm going on hipe, praising the creator...

I saw just a "single engine vaguely clipped" be ostracized like it was Satan...

It depends...

... KSP is a great game, but (not an "against SQUAD rant") I feel that we have very few parts to create good vehicles. We should have an "improving-R&D facility" that could allow to "improve", sometime, engines... we should have "procedural parts", to design our tanks... we should have... but when we dn't have them, we can "create" them with clipping.

It's almost the same like "stock vs modded game" discussion: I mod my game to add features important to me, to lower part conuts with specialized part, I mod my game because I have more fun with it...

... if it is fun, for any who plays, it's good: it's a "single player game". You do not race against anyone on different playground: the best part of KSP is the "creation", for me...

And Guz has a VERY good taste, in his creation :P

i have upgraded the Shuttle to a bigger version. it behaves pretty much the same but stores a greater amount of fuel and additionally has 2 Thud-engines aboard.

183 parts / 752 tons

i tried what you said, it saved the weight and ...

it killed 4 kerbals getting grilled in the reentry-heat

at least the cockpit-deflector wasnt needed :)
