{AMRSD} Convair F2Y Sea Dart

Recommended Posts

Alright, here's my latest craft, built to celebrate the addition of hydrodynamics in KSP, the only seaplane to ever exceed the speed of sound, the Convair F2Y Sea Dart!

Again, I have a video of it in action:

The Convair F2Y Sea Dart itself was a failure in real life, as it was underpowered and actually dangerous. However, you need not worry about either of those problems, due to the magic of clipping and flight reversion. My first version had a more accurate hull, however the water drag was far too high, so I swapped in some structural fuselages, and it was able to take off from water.

And now, here's some pictures:

You might notice that this page loaded faster than usual for this number of pictures. That's because I converted the PNGs to JPG before uploading them. Tell me whether it works, please.

Ha ha, ok. Anything else in the book worth making?

Hmm, I can't remember much of it. It had a great early seaplane which was basically three huge pairs of triplane wings bolted to a boat, I can't find any pictures, unfortunately. And there was the christmas Bullet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Bullet

Also, it seems that there's two books of that title, I'm not sure which I read.

Aah, the sea dart. It actually wasn't a failed aircraft, they eventually fixed all but one of it's issues. That issue being it was no longer needed due to the construction of the big aircraft carrier of the time. It's only flaw left at this point, was lack of Naval interest.

If I remember right, it used Hydroskis for it's water landing gear. They acted like part water skis and part hydrofoil. As the aircraft gained speed, the skis would lift its buoyant body out of the water, greatly reducing drag and letting the craft reach the high takeoff speeds it required. They also allowed the aircraft to hit the water, hard, at high speeds during landing.

Don't think any stock parts could fully simulate the Hydroskis though. Would look even better if you could add something to at least represent the hydroskis, since they were such a big part of the aircrafts looks.

Hydrofoils work fine and you can land at up to around 80m/s if your vertical speed is very small.

Nice job, I had heard and seen pictures of this craft before.

I also had a good idea for your star wars reproductions, the Juno would be great for Lukes Landspeeder.

Well, the problem was that they were extendable/retractable, so they would look weird in the air if they were always extended. The closest I could come to it was airbrakes set up so that they were pointed out a bit close to where the hydroskis would be. Unfortunately, it couldn't take off with them, and they didn't lift it off the water.

Thanks! And good idea about the landspeeder, I'll give that a try.
