so now rescue Kerbals aren't just floating in suits (an improvement) but their pods are cluttering up my orbit with debris!

In a game where I decided "This time, no debris!!"

As long as you have girders ( aka, since the start of career ) you can clean stuff out. Just make a inverted cup with them on the ship and drag the debris to a suborbital trajectory

BTW this was the standart way of "docking" before docking ports were added to the game

Or arm the rescue craft with stock missiles and attempt to scuttle the debris after rescue to prevent the capsule from falling into enemy hands creating yet more debris:D

Which LS are you talking about?

If you're using TAC-LS: it gives you a free ride until the first time the ship goes "live" (i.e. the first time you get your currently controlled ship within 2.3 km of it). And even then, you have as long as a Kerbal EVA suit's LS will last, which is several hours.

I've played with the idea of aligning the rescue craft to blow up the debris with a engine blast... havent seen if it works tho...
