Parachutes burning up on LAUNCH!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, here looking for some help -

Every time the mk1 radials or the nose tip ones whatever they're called - the parachutes - every time I get to 250m/s on launch they burn up and turn "unsafe" for deployment. This is on the way up, usually less than twenty seconds from launch at full thrust. I can slowly accelerate to stay under the 250 or so threshold, but then it takes about 10 minutes and ....loads of fuel to escape the atmosphere.

I've tried sticking aerodynamic stuff to block it as well as heat sinks on the side and protecting them, but to no avail. It feels like this is just a hyper strict rule that needs changing on the parachutes - because what's the point if you can't accelerate to enough of an escape speed?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Are they physically blowing up? If not, as long as you are not trying to deploy them, you are fine. The indicator only tells you that if you try to deploy the it's unsafe, not that they are broken. If they are blowing up, then its probably a problem with your heat.

This is happening to me too. It is actually disabling the chute (burning it up) during launch. The parachute icon turns red and stays red. I go through staging but during reentry it won't deploy. This happens when I  use the solid rockets. I can control it with liquid engines but I can't reach orbit. HELP!! It's getting very frustrating.

Hi @Flash Gordon, they turn red to show that if you activate them at that point they will be destroyed.

If you have not activated them they are not destroyed.

They will turn white again when you're in space, it's safe to activate them at that point but they will be destroyed during re-entry, if you do activate they can be disarmed in their action menu.

When you re-enter they will turn red again, showing that if you activate them at that point they will be destroyed.

As you slow down they will again turn white, and it will be safe to use them.

So ignore the red icon until you are re-entering, then wait for them to turn white before activating them.

Hope this helps.

u can easily see the difference:

Red/yellow Background means: "unsafe to deploy now"
Red Parachute means "broken Parachute"

As long as the parachute itself (and not the background) is white, everything is fine!

I've launched 3 times and everyone has damaged the parachute and it won't deploy on reentry. The icon has a red back ground with a  white icon. I go through the stages and it stays red. When I reenter and try to deploy it says the "parachute was damaged by aero forces and heat".

The parachute icon should turn back to grey once the atmosphere slows your ship to about 250 m/s. Once it turns grey, it is safe to deploy your parachutes.

However, if your angle of reentry is too steep, you may not slow down quickly enough to use your 'chutes. Make sure you are ascending at an angle, not going straight up.
