My first non-disastrous Mun landing!

Hello there!

Today, for the first time, I managed to get to the Mun, land (without toppling over) and get back to Kerbin! I just wanted to post some pictures below!

I know the feeling. My first effort on the Mun resulted in the lander toppling over, crashing, and having only the command pod survive. Took me 4 tries to land a life boat to bring my Kerbal home....

Did you do Minmus first, or just stick to the hard way?

I went to the Mun first. I thought it would be easier, as it is closer.

It is easier to get to and orbit Mun but much, much easier to land on Minmus. So now you know, that when you get there, you'll have an easy time of it :-)

Yeah, I find it a thousand times easier to get to Minmus and back. Once you get the hang of making maneuver nodes, it's much easier than a Mun mission. Case in point: Landed on the Mun 6 times, got back twice. Landed on Minmus over 15 times, got back every time.

I suppose of you're not using Mechjeb, getting the inclination right for Minmus could be tricky. It takes a bit more delta-v to get out that far too, but not much. If you're going with a reusable SSTO then getting the inclination right to land back at KSC could be tricky too.

That said, Minmus is vastly easier to land on due to its far lower gravity and abundance of perfectly flat regions. Mun is sort of middle of the road as difficulty goes.

Not too tricky. You have to launch on the Minmus orbital plane. KSC goes through this plane 2 times per day. You can use map view. First set Kerbin in focus. Adjust camera so that it is on Mun's orbital plane. The orbit seems then as a line. Go further from Kerbin so that you see orbit of the Minmus. Rotate view so that Minmus orbit seems a line too. Then you watch from nodal line, because the orbit of Mun is equatorial. Wait until Kerbin rotates so that you see the craft symbol at the intersection point of orbit lines. Check also do you have to go to north or south. Headings are 84 degrees and 96 degrees, respecticely. Try to keep heading at that value during ascent. It is relatively easy to get +-2 degree accuracy without Mechjeb and +-1 degree with Mechjeb.

Congrats big big time. Been playing for years and the mun still keeps me on my toes catching me with a steep landing zone. Then i gotta stay down and hope it doesnt tip over when i disable stability or i risk moving .... always fun the mun. Congrats again and ty for the picks. We all love seeing other lander setups.

Omg there ya go. I decided to check that link in your thanks and i learned about the radar altimeter. I usually went by shadow and spotlights facing down to see where ground height was. Well now i have another useful instrument thanxs to you. Congrats and thankyou.

First Mun landing is always awesome, and special, cause it's the first of (hopefully) many great endeavours that these funky looking green guys will make under your control, or at least landings. Huh, that may have sounded a little bit too philosophical.

Mun landing: Minmus landing: BAME done! Lets do something else! (this has to be said with a Jersey accent)

So awesome. Have you done a successful docking? That's probably where I would go next.

The first time I landed on the mun I could hear my heart pounding in my ears. I also did the mun first simply because I didn't know that minmus was even there. I didn't zoom out far enough in the map view to see it.

There is no such thing as "my first" anything in KSP.

There is only joy or total despair, sometimes, both at the same time. In KSP, using the "revert" feature, one becomes a time traveller of sorts.

But I am happy you experienced joy!
