Modding KSP making 3D game models? Is it worth the trouble?

Is it worth the trouble making spacecraft parts for KSP using mod dev tools like Blender Unity etc? And what is the skill required to do so?Do you have to have collage degree knowledge.Or can any one learn how to mod with basic computer  navigation skills? And is it really worth the trouble?

If we're talking making parts, just modeling and config writing, I believe just about anybody would be able to learn. If you're wanting to write plugins, then you need to have some C# programming knowledge.

As for the worth, it really depends what it is you want to make and whether or not you want to do that for yourself. If it's worth it to you, make it.

Might i add from recent personal experience, that making ANIMATED parts, also adds another level of complexity...

What steps should i take if i want to make lets say a standard cylindrical rocket model for the game?

Well, first you'll need to get yourself a copy of 3D modeling software. I use Blender, it's free and powerful, but it is a bit complicated and not very intuitive. It's extensive functions are largely buried in keyboard shortcuts that it makes no mention of. If you do go that route, DEFINITELY spend some time reading/watching tutorials (I'll put a couple at the bottom of this post). An alternative is Sketchup which I've been told is simpler and easier, but I have no experience with it myself.

Once you've gotten the modeling down, you'll need to use Unity and the Part Tools package to export the model into a format usable by KSP.

Blender Tutorials (might seem silly but they really helped me):

My first (and successful) attempt at modelling a very simple part, and getting a "feel" for modelling, I used Wings 3D... Also free.. Its quite a bit less complicated, and a bit more intuitive...

I found Beale's tutorial to be the best one for Wings:

Beginner's Part Modding tutorial

If you decide on Blender, Taniwha's Blender .mu Import/Export Tool can come in handy as well...

Learning how to 3D model is a huge skill that can be expanded past modding into other applications, such as CAD design. You do not need to have a college degree to 3D model (although having one gives you a ginormous advantage), all you need is a lot time and patience, especially using programs like 3DS Max, Blender, Wings3D, ect. I learned how to model in Blender through free tutorials like Blender 3D: Noob to Pro and Youtube channels such as BornCG and SpiritCrisis, and expanded later on into some not so free books. It can take awhile to get a hold on the stuff they talk about, but eventually you'll learn through experience and experimentation. It can take a few weeks to learn how to properly use it , but it can years to master. I started learning 2 years ago and I still have a lot to learn. It's so worth the trouble of learning it, even if it isn't for modding purposes.

As for stuff like Unity, I recommend you go to the mod development links compilation thread on this forum. Unity is a completely different pot of coffee compared to 3D modeling. It also tastes bitter.
