Some form of landing zone predictor

Recommended Posts

I had an idea for a little enhancement but I am unsure of how it could be implemented. Essentially I would like it so if I moused over the orbit line, it could roughly show me where the planetoid will have rotated to when I get to that point.

Certain low gravity bodies have a tendency to spin below you as you are descending at .5 m/s for example, and the ability to visually project where you will eventually come down can be helpful if you are trying to hit a certain biome.

I don't know if that would be part of the tier 3 tracking station, or not, but would like discussion on the idea.

Perhaps the above idea could be tier 2, and tier 3 could also predict atmospheric drag for more precise re-entrys?

Indeed. Rendezvous in space has some very neat interface features to make it easy, e.g. the "closest encounter" and "target position at encounter" markers, as well as the possibility to set an object as your target. Missing this kind of prediction has lead to many frustrating reloads for me as well (on "fly over zone" contracts e.g. when planning descent from orbit).

For planetside/ground targets, at the moment you can select landed craft as a target and you get markers from contracts, but some very useful features are only added by mods: position of KSC (RT2), select or preview landing zone/ground target (MJ).

Trajectories is a good solution that takes atmospheric drag into account, it can show you the actual path you'll take or it can adjust it according to the planets rotation, showing your landing spot.

I don't think they'd adopt it as stock in its current form though.

I find Trajectories has a very good unobtrusive interface, exactly what I'd expect of such a tool.

A feature like this in stock would certainly get my approval.

For career it would make sense for it to be linked to high level pilots and/or high tier tracking station.  Though as an experienced pilot skill only it would give pilots a real function.

Oh I love it and use it all the time.  But I think Squad would want a simpler implementation.  The interface is fine for me too but I'd like to be able to customise the line thickness.

I like the idea of adding this as a pilot ability, and higher tier probe functionality.

Its one of those things in this game that is just pure guesswork, nodes allow us to "test" other aspects, but landing is still all up to the player or alternative tools. Same can be said for Delta-V, but thats a WHOLE different story haha.

Yeah this seems like a really obvious potential Pilot ability.

Yup. I agree. Maybe the higher the level the smaller the predicted landing site gets.

And yeah, Trajectories is a great mod.
