Kraken ate my scrap - Contract only partially completable now...

On a mission to recover a Kerbil and his scrap - got the Kerbil - but the scrap fell through the surface of Minimus (and keeps falling through, no matter whether I reload, shut down and reload, etc...).

 

Now the contract is unable to be completed - can I cancel the contract and still get partial credit - or should I let it fail for the single missed element of the mission (recover the scrap...)?

 

What to do?

I'd chalk this one up as a bug.  Take the kerbal home, then pop open the debug menu and mark the contract as "completed."  I don't count that as cheating, it's not your fault if a program bug puts you in an impossible position.

Also, report the bug.

I had the same problem on the Mun in my career mode. It's still waiting around somewhere.
