EVA from surface to orbit on Mun????

Hello,

There are gonna be a whole lot of "no"s here but I practically did what Scott Manley did with a spare engine at one point (I can't find that video)(Did that happen?): I sent Bill from the surface of the Mun in EVA to orbit.

I ended up doing so since my lander was destroyed, so Bill decided to grab as much propellant as possible, walked up the edge of the crater rim, and fired the pack due east as much as possible, whenever the AP went too far ahead I stopped and waited. Starting height: 5435m ending orbit 8.5x10.7 km.

Has anyone done this before as well? I'll take Jeb and Bob up with pics.

I don't think Kerbal suits carry enough delta-V to make orbit, but if you can rendezvous with a can somewhere on the way you should be golden.

E: Apparently they do carry enough delta-V, 600m/s, but the margins are quite thin for Mun orbit.

I must have been lucky. I'll upload a screenshot of Bill in orbit but it could take a while.

EDIT: @Gaarst try starting at about 5kms up (like I did).

EDIT 2: Anyone up for a challenge for this?

No, you weren't lucky, you made it within the margins. :)

If this belongs in Mission Reports tell me.

Oh, sorry then, for some reason I thought they only packed 300 m/s of dV.

Then, making Mun orbit with a Kerbal is very possible.

Well, now you need to do the reverse and make an EVA LANDING from orbit!

After my KSC team completes their investigation on why Bob and the rescue craft crashed into the Mun ;)

EDIT: Challenge going up for this :)

I thought that's how we always do it....? I mean, who needs a LEM when you have EVA suits packing 600m/s?? :sticktongue:

Just kidding, of course, I did it a few times on Minmus back in the days. Its fun, especially landing like that.

It was more fun with rendezvous and docking with no navball back before 1.0.5. I've done it on Gilly and Minmus, but I don't think I've done it on Bop or Pol.

Starting from high-altitude ground helps quite a bit.

You can also "cheat in" a few extra m/s of ∆v by taking a running leap off an east-facing cliff as you turn on your jetpack.

In related news, Scott Manley once took an intrepid kerbalnaut from the surface of Gilly to the surface of Kerbin with nothing more than jetpack fuel and a modded-in EVA parachute (before reentry heat damage was added, of course).

And here I was all pleased with myself for using the jetpack to go from Minimus back to the surface of Kerbin.

Though that guy didn't have a parachute.

I love it when people dig up old Youtube links that show all the cool stuff you used to be able to do in this game...

I'm pretty sure you could still do that if you turned down re-entry heating. And it would take a lot of trial and error to actually prove that there is no PE for a Kerbal returning from Gilly where he gets captured but still survives with the default setup.

Will a Kerbal burn up on re-entry now, even if you turn their helmet prograde?!

The horror!

I know I've had Val survive an EVA water landing post-1.0...but if I recall, she bailed after it broke up while aerobraking.

Of my three survived EVA re-entries, I think that was the only one post-release.

With KAS/KIS, could a Kerbal hold onto a heat shield and survive? Hmmm...

They can totally survive entry from LKO, or -slow- aerobraking from the Mun. I wanna figure out the exact speed that they can withstand when doing an aerocapture (with the ideal PE) for a while. Though I secretly hoping someone else will do it, as I always find some better occupation when playing. ^_^

I'm sure I'll test it, at some point...

...none of mine have been what you'd called a "scheduled" test, so far.
