Mostly by activity stream for followed content, and I subscribe to everything I post in and some other threads besides that.

I also have a separate stream for followed mod threads, to keep up on updates (though this doesn't work perfectly for me as I sometimes have to post as a moderator in mod threads for add-ons I don't use): http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/discover/92/

You can add either of these streams to your own custom streams by following the links above and clicking "Add to My Streams". They will contain info from threads you follow rather than the ones I follow.

I browse around.  That's probably why I'm always the last to find out about things...  At least I get notified about a good majority of the threads I follow, etc.

I unfortunately have all kinds of time to spend on the forum, and the ability to surf it any time I want, through out the day & night, so I basically use the "stock" Unread Threads stream, just with the Lounge, KerbalEDU & International forums removed... I also use the "condensed" view, so I just get thread titles; no previews... I also use a heavily modded dark, Stylish theme for the site, with lots of the "facebook"-ey items changed or removed from the activity stream...

I use my following list the most. Some forums I browse directly (Daily Kerbal, General KSP, Portuguese subforum and the Lounge), and eventually I check All Activity for interesting topics and new interesting people to follow, then keep to these.

I used to browse the Science forums, too, but naaah...

I created a subscription activity stream to try and mimic the old style its not as good as the Vbulletin option but its all I have to work with in this junk forum software

I pretty much just browse around the forums. I don't lurk too much.
