So, I tried to edit the textures with the pictures that are in the testers folder, but paint nor gimp will open them. How am I supposed to edit these?  Am I able to edit these?

Try here

There are plugin for gimp and other programs that will let you edit dds , I convert then to png and edit them and back to dds and on the testers folder alittle more info would be nice has to what mod ? Is it a mod that has FS texture switcher cg's ?

So, I saw this thread and I saw gimp, but is there a way to directly convert .DDS to .jpeg Imogene so it would be easier to edit? Because my school has gimp, and I don't want to get into trouble installing 3rd party plugins.

edit** I realized I said testers folder, supposed to say texture folder.

What procedural fairings are you talking about? The Squad ones or the ones from felger/e-dog? (Mods)

Both are just simple .dds files with nothing special to them, the squad ones are DXT1 compressed (no alpha channel) and the ones from felger/e-dog are DXT5 compressed (with alpha channel).

There is a .dds plugin for photoshop from nvidia, or you can use compressonator (a standalone .dds compressor from AMD) or also the amd compress cli tool. Which of course all work regardless of your gpu manufacturer.

Or you can just use irfanview (with the irfanview plugin addon installed) to view and convert these .dds files into something you can edit with gimp, like tga. You do not want to konvert it in jpg. DDS itself is already a lossy compression, and .jpg is one, too. So use .tga or .png instead.

If you want to see .dds files right in the explorer (and .psd and a bunch of different formats, too), just use SageThumbs.

I am using the moded fairings, and all I want to do is make a green fairing with a flag on it. Ideally, I would like something like a green farong with a white strip in the bottom with a flag on the strip with the kW interior.is there any way to make that esaly? I am NOT a mod maker. I will add a picture of my design later.

Well I laid out the workflow in my post above. Use one of the many tools that are mentioned, like ImageMagik, irfanview, compressonator, ati_compress or the nvidia .dds plugin to convert the original textures to something you can edit, like tga. Then paint this tga to your likings. (you can simply use the tga to test it ingame). If you are happy with the results, you can use one of the tools from above (or the ksp dds converter tool) to change to format to dds again (i would suggest using the dds converter, its just a select the folder, click apply work without the need to set the compressiion etc). Or you leave it as tga, which is just a little more memory consuming. But for one texture its totally fine.

Im not completely shure though if your white stripe with flag will work easily. I think know that the procedural fairings repeat the texture after a certain height, so it may be that you will get another stripe in the middle of the fairing. But, i havent worked much with those mods. Just give it a try^^

I have looked up those tools, and I think I'm going to go with image magick.  Thank you for the suggestion!  I believe that I can set it so that it does not repeat. There are textures that if it did repeat that it would mess up, and it doesn't repeat.

what format should I put it into edit it in paint? Because now that I can use image magic, it will be done at home not school.  Sorry about the empty quote, I don't know how to get rid of that.
