Single key to stop time warp? (No mods.)

Recommended Posts

I tried to search the forum, but only could find pages about timewarping problems with some mods. (And I might have asked that question before, but couldn't find it either, might have gotten lost when the forum was moved.)

Is there a way in the stock game to stop timewarp with just one button? (Instead of pressing the Decrease-time-warp-button multiple times.)

(I am not willing to install any mods, so you may quote them for the sake of completness, but don't expect me to try them. I hope there are answers that do not include mods, even if I have to hear that it can't be done in the stock game.)

Nope, pretty sure that in stock the only answer is to tappity-tap the "decrease warp" button multiple times.

I suppose you could do it with two button presses (press F5, then press-and-hold F9; loading a game interrupts timewarp) ... but that would be far slower than just spamming the decrease-warp button, so it's not a very practical option.

[Edit] Apparently all the above is completely wrong, there's a feature that they added (likely in 1.0+) and didn't tell anybody about.  Per JedTech, it's the 'X' key.  Learn something new every day!

Incidentally, one more thing, which isn't what you're asking but is a handy feature you may not be aware of, so it's worth mentioning:  you have the option of putting the ship into physics warp even when it's not in atmosphere, which can be useful to save time during long engine burns (e.g. if you're using nuke or ion engines).  Just hold down the ALT key when you press the "increase warp" button.

Press X to stop time warp completely.

Really?  If that's the case, I have been educated today!  :)  Have been playing KSP for two years and never came across that.

(Can't check it for myself right now, since I'm not on a KSP machine.)

Is this a relatively recent feature?  It's not listed on the key bindings wiki.  If it's a recent feature, that might explain why it didn't get into the wiki (and why I never heard of it, if it wasn't around when I started playing).

Don't know how long it has been in the game. It got mentioned on the forum a few months ago. At that time I felt exactly like you do now.

I just scanned some version change logs and couldn't find the exact version that the change occurred in. I'm fairly confident it was 1.0+

This relates to a suggestion I made a while ago for every key binding to be user mappable. I know a very large portion already are but some are not. The option to bind all of them would serve as a reminder to users that the function exists.

I also didn`t know X dropped you out of warp. TYVM

x kills the warp on my install. I didn't test to see if the caps lock makes a difference. Will do some more tests later if no one else figures it out first.

I wonder if it's an upgrade-vs-fresh-install issue?  i.e. maybe people who already had an old version of KSP that got upgraded didn't receive new key bindings, but people who installed after the new feature got it by default?  I should go look at the key bindings settings and see what I find.

I thought X key stopping warp is a KAC feature?

Ah, that might explain it.  KAC is one of those mods that becomes ubiquitous and indispensable to people who use it-- typically they've had it installed since forever, so the line between "stock" and "KAC" gets blurred.  I don't use it myself, so I don't get that behavior.

If that really is what's going on here, then the answer to @egoego's question is "no, you can't do this without a mod."

Nope -- I did this with fresh installs. Stock plus at most Asteroid Day.

Perhaps you can do it without a mod in the game. You just need a separate program to manage your keyboard that allows you to assign macros to different keys. In that case, you could just have the program spam the "<" key every 2 ms when you hold it down. That will effectively be one key press (that you might have to hold down for just a bit).

Ignore all this 'X' nonsense ^^

From the 1.1.0 readme.txt

"* Added a "Return to 1x time warp" keybinding, default is /"

To be fair, it didn't exist when the others wrote their posts back in February, so they could hardly have found it then.  It's only because I'm doing a trawl of threads I haven't previously read that I caught this question now.

Ah that explains it, didn't realise how old the thread was, I always get caught out by that!

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
