KSP Perlin Noise Planet Generation.

Recommended Posts

Perlin noise is a type of gradient noise (I'm not going to act like I fully understand that term) used to generate 3-dimensional terrains.

My point here is this:

Here's a mountain range on Kerbin:9fed844f7e1ecd815169ae8f50e182e5.jpg

And here's a mountain range generated via Terragen 0.9.19 using perlin noise:  River valleys

While the top screenshot displays a streched out, abnormally sharp and smooth terrain, the bottom screenshot (generated via Terragen 0.9.19) displays an actual mountain/valley range.

And here's the capabilities of the present version of Terragen- Terragen 3. Enjoy:  Terragen_003.jpg

I'm asking here if it is possible to generate Kerbin (and all the other planets in the Kerbol system) via perlin noise, and somehow replace the present Kerbin with the improved one.

By the way, the second screenshot from Terragen 0.9.19 is actually a generation of Kerbin. The SQUAD developers got the idea for Kerbin after looking at that planet model. Here's a link: http://libnoise.sourceforge.net/examples/complexplanet/index.html

I think this is an important topic, concerning the replacement/ improvement of the game graphics. So, @SQUAD, come 'ere and see for yourself.

Oh, and for all you volumetric-cloud modders, here's something to work on:  8205ff6c295370deb4d9f63d849ac77e.jpg

Also generated via perlin noise (Terragen 3).
