If you want it in a big city, like NYC, you could look just outside of NYC at the Liberty Science Center in NJ. The whole place is geared for kids / young people as everything there is meant as a hands-on learning experience. I have no idea of the costs, but considering they host anything from a birthday party to a full blown convention - there might be viable options. Filling out a simple form gets you an idea of the price for such a venue.

I tried to host a KerbalKon, but it ended up flopping seeing as I can get donations from outside sources. Seeing as I am not wealthy, there was no chance for me to host one. At least I tried.

Works for me, I could probably walk or get a tram to that .  

But the National Space Centre in Leicester is probably far more appropriate.  Both cities are pretty central and about as convenient as each other to get to for most of the UK population.
