KSP PC controller support

So with the console release coming out before E3, which will need to make full use of the xbox 1 controller, I'm wondering if that will be brought along to the PC version also. I've been with Kerbal on the PC for years, and have no real qualms with the keyboard and mouse setup, but it would be nice to have the freedom to switch between the 2 and have full functionality out of both. Sometimes i'm just in a controller mood I guess lol

Does the PC version already have native controller support? And for the record I'd be attempting to use an Xbox 360 controller

Sure does but you need to manually assign buttons and axis..

My weapon of choice for driving 4429 and her sistertrains in my signature is an xbox360 MC2 Madcatz steering wheel.. Same thing more or less

I've been playing with a xbox controller since .23.
Thing is there are no contextual buttons so you sometimes have to do clever things with mode configuring and such if you want different buttons or control schemes for different things. You also have to know what those buttons are as there's no hinting. The mod automatic fly by wire makes life much easier on that one.

Everytime I see your signature I allways imagine you playing KSP only as some kind of train simulator, don't know why but like some nerd with whistle and a funny hat going choo-choo all the time. It does look nice though!

The first part is correct..

KSP is my landtrain simulator with dedicated wheel and throttle controllers.. Rarely do I use aircraft.. With a joystick..when I do its with KAX propellers..

Rockets..mun..other planets..

Never

Ksp is the best long distance driving simulator ive ever owned..and the best use of the xbox steering wheel since forza horizon and my beetle

Controllers ftw :)

For the record though my trains have airhorns not whistles :)

Hahaha @Overland, I love your posts and your creations. KSP is great.

One thing to mention about controllers: after you have your controller/joystick set up done correctly, save the settings file somewhere. KSP has the nasty habit of deleting this file and resetting all your controller settings should you ever start up the game without the controller plugged in (or I have the suspicion sometimes it does that even when your stuff is plugged into a different port, but that might be because I use multiple joysticks and KSP only calls them Joystick 1, 2, etc)

The Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers work perfectly with KSP. I map yaw to the triggers, thrust up/down to L1 and R1. The D-Pad set to move the camera and the right stick for flight controls. I map buttons to gear, brakes, SAS and RCS. I've also found when I stream KSP to my MacBook Air from my PC desktop (via Stream in home streaming) the controller still works as if it was plugged into the PC!

Cool so it will work fine, but how does set up correctly? is it done in the options menu in game or do i have to play around with the files on my drive? where is the settings file id be looking for located?

Its in the games settings menu, go to settings then input. It is a very easy to understand interface, like you see it in other games too, lets you assign all the comands to buttons and axis.

the settings file is in your ksp folder. I find mine usually near the bottom of the list of folders and files.

If KSP crashes it can also sometimes oddly revert some but not all buttons to default (keyboard)

Most of the time restarting the game again in my experience fixes it.. But making a shortcut to KSPs root directory with a regular backup of the settings file you can just replace helps..thankfully its becoming rare as KSP progresses

Another thing..with throttles I use one axis for up..and the "secondary" option for down..otherwise it sits in the middle.. But with xbox triggers thats a natural state anyway

This is a good idea, but I go one step further. After I get all the settings to how I want them, I quit the game and make a copy of the settings like you said, but then I also change the properties of the settings file to read-only. That way even if I forget to have my controller plugged in when I start KSP, it's usually not a problem.

I use an xbox 360 controller too. Only issue I've had is that EVA seems impossible to map correctly, so I always have to end up using the keyboard... oh well. :)

Same here, I can never get the jet pack controls to work right.

Supplementing the Xbox feedback: I've used an old Playstation controller with an old, cheap USB adapter, and it works fine. I find mouse+keyboard feels better, though, so it's mainly for occasional novelty value.

I mapped the left analog stick to WASD, right stick to camera, upper triggers to RCS/SAS, lower triggers to roll, 'start' to stage, and the right thumb buttons to some combination of throttle controls (I think shift/ctrl/Z/X). My settings.cfg says that B and G were also bound in there somewhere, presumably either select or the sticks' press-down state.
