Duna Sample Return Challenge (No ISRU) (automated)

Recommended Posts

I present to you: The Duna Sample Return Challenge! It's simple: first, launch a rover that does whatever it does on Duna. Let's pretend it collected samples that would be worth a lot of Science(!). Now, the challenge: in one launch, without ISRU or Alt-F12, land a lander that weighs at least 10 tons, have it grab the rover, and return the rover to Kerbin without damaging or destroying any parts of the rover.

Why force the lander to be heavy?  Do we need to bring along ballast to meet that requirement?  Seems kinda superfluous to me . . .

I meant one ton, but accidentally typed in a zero, too. And autocorrect saw the "10", so it changed "ton" to "tons". The 1-ton requirement is because that seems like the minimum for a real-life sample return lander.

Does it have to grab or can it carry it in a 2.5m cargo bay?

Whatever you like, although the rover has to be attached so I guess you'll need a Klaw or docking port.

I can make very, very small rovers, even with one wheel. Wouldn't it make more sense to set a weight for the rover than the lander?

True... OK, the rover weight limit is >= 0.3 tons.
