I am sorry to say that the rice thing is a bit of a myth. It is not going to save your hardware. In some cases, it is going to make things worse. The best thing you can do is to remove as much water as you can and open up the system as much as you can. After that, you try to replace the dirty water with clean water (distilled or demi-water) or the right kind of alcohol. That way, you wash the corrosive elements from your hardware. In some cases it is not really straightforward though, since some components get damaged easily. Screens and hard drives will not like such washing, for instance, since they capture the fluid and will not easily get rid of it afterwards. so you should be smart about what to wash.

After washing, you need to thoroughly dry your components naturally. Do not try to blow dry them or accelerate drying with other heat sources, since it might both accelerate damage and give a false sense of the parts being dry while they are not in hidden spots. Do not try to power up your components if they are not absolutely bone dry.

Well, it seemed to work, and I'm happy with that.

At least Universe sandbox 2 and the KSP demo files seem to still be fine.

What seemed to work? You have damage. Besides, corrosion is something that often only shows itself after a while, so you are not out of the woods yet. This is why you need to wash your electronics of corrosive elements. In your case though, that ship has sailed.

I know that, I was mostly pointing out that it's working for now, but the moment I turn 16 )Well not the moment, but you know what I mean), I'm going to get a job for a new computer.

It also seems the five, seven and nine keys aren't working. :/

Well, for the most part, it's working.

True hardware-abuse story from a few years back.

My 1GB flash drive got forgotten-about, was left in a pocket, and was subjected to a full cycle in the washing machine.

Still works fine to this day! And my data has that fresh clean springtime scent......

Maybe the electronics in the flash drive are encased in epoxy/plastic. Generally, washing up is terrible, because it breaks the surface tension of the water and ensures it gets everywhere. Also, do not store anything you are not prepared to lose on that thing :D

Ummmm.....yeah......the whole point of a backup IS to preserve stuff you're not prepared to lose?

Dunno what the housing of that flash drive is made of, all I know is it's a Chuck Norris kind of flash drive and I'm keeping it. If it can handle a goddamn washing machine, I'm pretty sure few other things short of a direct nuclear strike will kill it.

You may want to buy another one of those, and stress test it so you know what's exactly going to happen to it :)

I had the habit of leaving cell phones in my pants pockets. My wife had the nasty habit of putting them through the laundry without checking the pockets, so I had a few squeaky clean bricks. It didn't help that when she found them she'd wonder "does it work?" and then turn it on. It worked briefly, She finally caught on with the last one, since I had told her what to do. "Do NOT turn it on. Remove battery. Store in a bowl of rice to absorb water." The last one actually worked quite well for a long time, with just one button acting a little addled, but eventually even that dried out.

Then I finally learned not to leave phones in my pant pockets.

Sorry for the hiatus, my computer got wet, luckily we were able to get dried and in rice before significant damage took place, unfortunately damage did take place, and my mousepad isn't working, so I have to use a wired mouse now.

Well, I've stepped on it accidentally twice, luckily, there's no cracks or anything

Anyway, this will likely be the computer I get: http://www.amazon.com/X551MA-Laptop-Intel-Celeron-500GB/dp/B00SV72ZA2/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

If only. I bought it twelve years ago. Outdated technology. These days, you can get 1GB flash drives in your breakfast cereal, and the only use for them is for throwing at basketball players whenever they whiff a free throw.

You might have misunderstood me, or I was not entirely clear. A thumb drive that has been through your washing machine should not be trusted in any shape, way or form. It cannot be considered backup and is in many ways to opposite, so assume any data you put on there is already lost.
