Questions about the muderator role

So, I've seen a whole ton of new muds come around, and I've been wondering, did they apply? Was it just a raffle of people chosen? How did they become mods, in a sense. Also, if you guys want to share, what did you guys look for in a mod?

First, SQUAD announces a coven gathering in a secret internal forum post. Then the names of forum users are carved into chicken bones, which are mixed into a boiling cauldron. A modder is sacrificed, and his entrails are added to the broth. Chanting ensues. Finally, a laser reflected off of the LRRR sets the supports under the cauldron on fire, which collapse and spill the foul liquid across the floor. The five bones nearest the modder's liver are collected, and the names on them are given moderator status.

We recently invited six people to join the moderation team and they accepted. Occasionally in the past we have asked for people to apply rather than inviting people directly.

When it is decided to invite new moderators, the existing mods nominate and discuss members who we feel would be a good fit; eventually the list is narrowed down to the number of mods we're looking to bring in and invitations are sent. If accepted there is usually an interview with KasperVld before joining the moderation team.

What we look for in mods:
- At least 18 years old
- Regularly active on the forum
- Significant positive contribution to the forum community
- A relatively clean infraction history (a few minor black marks won't disqualify someone, but consistent rule-breaking certainly will)
- Fluency in English is required, fluency in other languages is helpful

That makes sense, though I don't know why....

I fill out four out of five requirements, except the first one :)

Also, were you one of the original moderators, or were you recruited?

I was recruited, and I'm far from a long serving moderator. Up until the latest batch of moderators were brought in there were only two with less time served than me.

Just out of curiosity (and assuming it's not too far out of the scope of this thread), how long has Sal Vager had superpowers?

Even before you were a moderator, every one thought you were one. :D

YOU stand-up guy.... a little warning would have been nice, I just took a mouthful of coffee and then got to the chicken bone part....

It took all I had not to laugh and spray coffee all over the monitor.... :)

I'm definitely not moderator material... I speak my mind, and it gets me into trouble. I have been a moderator on other forums EXACTLY for that reason, but here, I'd be expected to tone it down... I cannot do that.... and to all those saying they would make a good Mod, the mere fact that you asked should disqualify you from being made a mod... if you only knew the crap they have to take (from me, especially) then you'd never WANT the job....

Besides... when they offer the job to the victims.... I'm sure a threat to their access is made should they refuse.... :)

Moderators are good people..... but the longer they stay a moderator... the less "good" they become... but only because people make them into a bad ass. :)

No, but his demeanor is perfect for the role, even in locales where he isn't a mod.

Let me put it this way, I have been banned from posting on this site.... I have been put on moderated posting on this site... I have had posts deleted on this site.... I have told off numerous times... the ONLY reason I'm still here and not been banned is because I love this game and I do my best not to push too many buttons at once.... :)

I often get banned from posting on FaceBook for two weeks at a time.... and as you may have heard, New Zealand has voted to KEEP its flag... I was heavily involved in KEEPING our current flag... but in the process... I spoke my mind once or twice too often and had visits from the Police who have tried to intimidate me.... I told them to ..... go away.... in very strong language.... I run an anti John Key (our PM) facebook group with nearly 1400 members...

yes.... I speak my mind....

Everybody has opinions. Voicing them effectively and appropriately is a learned skill, though some people have a natural talent for it. Sadly, those who have neither the skill or talent are often completely unaware of it.

(I'm not even sure which side of that equation I'm on most of the time)

I personally like my opinions to be loud and proud because it just helps me be me as I am literally a very loud person.
