1.1's VAB/SPH editor lighting

Recommended Posts

OK, so I totally understand if it's a bug that is still waiting to be fixed, but I haven't gotten any confirmation on this. In every shot of the VAB and SPH that I've seen from an official source, the editor lighting seems to be without any shadows. I do not hesitate to say that it is a massive step back in the visual quality of the game. If it is meant to be a feature, please disable it. I can see that it might be useful for seeing parts better, but the shadows in the VAB/SPH weren't very dark in the first place. Since it makes the VAB and SPH look so much worse, I really am worried about this and do not think it is a good feature. So I'm hoping it's a bug that can and will be fixed.

So what do you all think about it?

Well, according to this article, the editors have pre-baked lighting, meaning that all of the lights that you see in it have already been calculated for the paths.  There should be some other live lights, but it might have been broken a bit with Unity 5.  I will be the first to tell you that lighting in Unity 5 is really annoying.

I think they mean shadow on the parts.

If I got my glimpse at it right, the part catalogue looks dull and  washed out too, but this is still experimentals and not final right? :)

It could also be due to the streamers settings.  I do recall one of them adjusting gamma etc to try and make things more visible.

So after a month or so VAB/SPH lightning still looks like a game from 2005. Is this a bug or a feature?

I'm happy that Squad fixed lights in the editor itself. Care little for the lighting in the catalog.

Not sure I'd call the SPH lighting "fixed" - it looks like most of it was just removed & the lighting is from the door but with a large amount of ambient mixed, so what it actually looks like is someone forgot to turn the lights on & it's rather dark & gloomy, and most of all lacking in depth.

Spoiler

1.0.5: DX11 I think is the cause of the lack of craft shadow, I got used to odd quirks from DX11 every now and then. The rest of the lighting is bright, clear, upbeat, lights the craft in a way that suggests it's a 3d object ( compare the lighting on the tail with the 1.1 image ) and there's blue tones to the UI.

1.1: someone turned it all out! heavy grey, miserable and FLAT. There is still some blue mixed in but because it's all so dark it doesn't really come through.

I often locate a dropped part by finding it's shadow on the floor first.

Especially when you upgrade the probe core on a vessel. Remove rest of rocket, delete current probe core, select new one and... it's gone.  If it weren't for the shadow I would never be able to find it as it materializes inside the rocket that is rendered transparent but does not show the floating probe core inside it. Grr.
