Allow to collect scientific details in Sandbox Mode

Recommended Posts

Sadly, when you fly to some distant planet in Sandbox mode (eeloo) and decide to collect some science. Materials, temperature. Why should we not know these things? Okay, so you open up the science JR.. uh oh. It either tells you nothing or say to you that the Research and Development is closed so you can't understand anything. Its the same on Kerbin, want to see the temperature? Nope, can't do that. Barometer? Nope.

Some may say its because your in Sandbox and it shouldn't matter because you've unlocked everything, but it does matter. Its all about the roleplaying.

I want to fly to Duna, and be able to tell its temperature during noon, dusk and dawn. However, I can't do this. The display seems to be telling nonsense at the same time. Its frustrating that basic instruments aren't able to be used in Sandbox.

Science should be able to be collected in Sandbox.

I agree, science experiments should still behave exactly as they do in career, except the science they gain doesn't go into your bank, only to your science completion list in R&D.  The R&D should be available but with all nodes unlocked at start.

While I agree with you, I doubt that Squad is likely to change the way sandbox currently is.

However, there may be a way for you to already get what you want. Start a new career game on easy, then use the debug menu to give yourself loads of cash and science points. (If you didn't know, press alt-f12, then hold alt for a few seconds to get those options).

Then use the cash to upgrade all the buildings, use the science to unlock all the parts, and ignore the contracts. Viola, a sandbox game with science experiments.

This is actually one of the reasons I never play sandbox. It's ok to start a space program from a high-tech world, but why would I bother if there's no interesting data?

The actual 'science' gathered doesn't need to change the world to be relevant. Like cosmology, it may never affect our lives, but most of us still just want to know...

Agreed with all of the above.

There exists a (relatively) simple workaround, for those who are willing to mess with save files - start a new Science Sandbox game, then open the persistence file and edit it to give yourself All The Science.  Close it, load the game, and use the science to buy out/fill the tech tree.

That... probably would work ¬_¬

Gotta throw my vote in here too +1 . Having access to everything shouldnt mean youve done everything.

id still like to have to throw up a satelite network etc to see and plot the kerbol system from the start and take it from there :)

we can but dream

Yes, there are some workarounds and the debug menu in Career, but that doesn't really solve the problem completely. I will try the career debug and use that until Squad cops on. Its really a hindrance and unnecessary to block out Science (researching planets etc) in Sandbox.
