Jool 5 - 1.0.5 or 1.1?

So, long story short I've been quite ill and spent some time in hospital.  I came home yesterday to see that 1.1 has been released which has now put me in a dilemma.  Im just sorting out the last few checks before I launch my Jool 5 mission, but should I do this in 1.0.5 or attempt it in 1.1? Any thoughts on this?

You'll have the 10m heatshield to work with on 1.1, which might be advisable to use whilst aerobraking at Jool?

DONT USE THE 10M HEATSHEILD FOR JOOL! It has NO heat protection, just high drag, you will burn up with it. I learned that the hard way :(

I'd recommend giving 1.1 a go, but only after checking the mods you are using to make sure they have 1.1 compatible versions available. If you are using something that hasn't been updated yet that you can't live without, stick with 1.0.5. If you don't use mods or only use ones that are updated(many of the major mods are updated already) then 1.1 is definitely worth using. performance is much better and stability for me has been rock solid.

1.1 has a number of bugs still, it'll take them a bit to get them ironed out. It's working alright, nothing totally game breaking so far.

Opening the administration building doesn't really work.. it closes again instantly.

Solar panels are a bit iffy. Mine keep freezing up and not tracking or generating power because they're all blocked by "solarpanel2". None are blocked, and all are in direct light.. but no power. Closing the game and restarting fixes it though.

Had a couple crashes to desktop too.

A heatshield with no heat shielding?

It has a high maximum temperature (similar to static shields, around 3700K), just no ablator. Heatshields without ablator are still a lot better than nothing, and they weigh less. This new inflatable one is no good for serious aerobraking but should be fine for most landings beginning from reasonable orbits. Its main benefit is its huge 10m size when deployed; it's a great big umbrella you could land an entire base with. The body lift it provides may prove particularly useful over Laythe for adjusting one's trajectory to avoid a sea/land landing, depending on which you want.

It protects fine against the heat on reentry at Eve. I don't know what you're talking about.

How about having a different heat shield in front/behind the 10m one?  That way you have the heat shield with ablator taking the brunt of the heating and the 10m one slows down your craft alot?

10M shield's great for aerobraking!  A pre-release stream saw it slow a craft into a Jool aerocapture, then gently drift downward.  I'm guessing the craft would've exploded from the pressure eventually.  If you're worried about the aerobrake heat with that much drag, take a radiator or two along to pump away the heat.  Two large static rads can cool an infinifueled NTR to equilibrium, so they should help quite a bit here.
