KSP 1.2.2, Tarsier Space Technology v6.6.1, Research Bodies v1.8.1, CTT 3.0.3, Career game, tracking station fully upgraded.

I have researched the first scope in the tech tree and I've been waiting for a contract to put the scope into orbit.  Should I be?

There are such contracts in CactEye, which is compatible with ResearchBodies. But they only work with CactEye's own telescope.

I hope that all this talk of completely invisible planets doesn't include DOE flares for planets...

I rather like the idea of trying to hunt for them visually.

Planets are not invisible. they are greyscaled and scaled down as ResearchBodies currently does.
What I was talking about is making the Map nodes disappear, so you don't even see the "Unknown body" icon until they are discovered (which I have already successfully done). this does mean you can't target them. So I am working on contracts that will augment the discovery process. although you will still be able to point at them and discover them (if you are able to locate them).

I'll be making a big push over the weekend to try and get as much as I can done on this mod. sorry it's taken so long. But with the holiday season and I have a day job, and a night job (Squad). So It's taking longer than i would like, just finding enough blocks of free time to get things done. Hopefully won't be too much longer.

Ok, I was still having problems with discovering bodies so I created a new install, installed Kopernicus, GPP, Stock Visual Enhancement, and Research Bodies. All the planets for GPP showed up fine, I screwed up the planet textures so I installed SVE and that fixed the planet textures.

Procedure for problem: I used the cheat menu to edit a telescope into orbit, set Niven (the closest planet) as the target, set SAS to track target, opened the research bodies UI, clicked away, and no bodies were researched and only negative flavor text was displayed.

output log: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2WvukZy_YqaLUlJOTVxWFRGTTQ/view?usp=sharing

Research bodies log: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2WvukZy_YqaLXA4VFBGek9iWEU/view?usp=sharing

I had forgot about this until setting a new game up again but GPP has it's own database.cfg file. It looks like it just populates the flavor texts, planet names, and which planets are already discovered at what difficulty levels. This is going to be standard for all planet pack mods right? It shouldn't affect whether the telescope discovers something at all right?

I just had an incredibly lucid thought, no idea why this didn't occur to me before.
What are the distances involved in this GPP planet pack, I mean actual distances in km's (as I've never used it)??? It could be they are simply too great for the settings of the telescopes.

According to KER, the current planet I'm tracking is 10,014 Mm.

So that's roughly 16,000 Million Kms? I'm starting to see the issue here.
Sorry so what is the maximum distance between two bodies in the GPP pack? Metric system please (as that is what the game uses).

Between Gael (the starting planet) and Leto (the furthest planet) I estimate the max distance to be 278,288,680 km. (Semi-major axis Gael/2 + Semi-major axis Leto/2) I assume that's how you do the quick-and-dirty maximum distance.

Many of the planets are comparable distances to the stock solar system. Someone made a great antenna guide that shows the min and max distances of all the planets. I'll have to keep looking for it.

More info:

Semi-major axis of

Kerbin: 13 599 840 km / Gael: 13 984 360 km

Eve: 9 832 684 km / Niven: 10 488 300 km (closest planet)

Eeloo: 90 118 820 km / Leto: 542 593 000 km (farthest planet)

Edit 2: I'm not sure if I missed it the first time but the planet I was tracking is 10,014,000 km away according to Kerbal Engineer.

I always thought Mm stood for million meters, i.e. thousand km.

Yeah, I mis-read it, so these distances shouldn't be an issue.
With Kopernicus installed the range of the TB-75 is 540,000,000,000m

I have discovered that Research Bodies + Cacteye telescopes allows you to unlock the planets in GPP, so that is a good work around.

Work around for what exactly?
Givem that the cacteye mod is actually just using the same code/module from Research Bodies that RB uses for it's own parts I can't understand this logic. If one works, they would all work. As cacteye is just using the RB partmodule code.
EDIT: Perhaps it's as I suspected earlier. and just the range parameter. Has anyone tried increasing the maxTrackDistance for the TB-75. What is the cacteye one set to?
Sorry I'd check myself, but short on time lately.

I just tryed this mod out and cant discover anything, not even minmus. Ive seen others report the same issue so I'll wait for release and see again.

If you try it with the telescopes in CactEye you can get it to research bodies.

@Liquid5n0w @dave1904 You both need to actually read a little more.

Cacteye literally just uses modules FROM THIS MOD. If it works, this one should work. There is a response from the modder that is only two posts up, where he quoted and answered you.

As has been previously discussed, in its current form there is no visual queue of when a body becomes discovered, and the pointing of your telescope must be VERY accurate. As a result many users simply mash the research button and don't notice when the message briefly says something different then failed research or what ever (I haven't attempted the mechanic myself yet as I only just launched my first sputnik this career).

In short, it is most likely operator error, which is unsurprising, given that all of this information is available in the last few pages of this thread.

Cacteye uses a different interface that lets you see when it has captured the body, it also gives science results directly which also lets you know you got it.

I still can't get the included telescope to work, but the Cacteye ones do work.

I am trying to get a release out. but other things keep taking priority.
I have already added a pop-up dialog for when something is discovered that should resolve the issue of the player missing the discovered message which will be in the next version.

I still don't believe that cacteye would work with RB and the RB telescope does not. Have you tried my Tarsier telescopes?
I've run another test and the TB-75 and Tarsier telescopes finds bodies for me just fine.

hi,

I have never used this mod before... So think of me as "most-stupid-user"... So I was trying to imitate the latest Scott Manley series... (mostly Galileo Planetary System) I got to the point where I launched a telescope, and pointed it at a planet. I I hit the research button and on the first try I got a message that a body had been found. The list now showed the name of the body with a 0% next to it... I hit the button again and now I always get the message that there is nothing but space there...

How do I know whether or not the planet is actually researched? Because after a while it still says 0%? Or in other words.. what SHOULD be happening?

That is correct. You must return to the space centre and go to the Observatory. Your new planet should be there. You can then start to research it. If you stay in flight the display does not update to show the discovered bodies. I have fixed this but I think it's not in the publicly available dev builds.

Okay thanks! I've got some follow-up questions though.. by "observatory" you mean the tracking station? And by "be there" you mena it should show up with it's actual name as opposed to "unknown object"?

Because that is not happening. There is no button or anything that I could find that would let me do anything.

Because if I released it now there are too many other things not finished or with bugs.

What version are you using?
Observatory is available as a new KSC building in the dev build I released.

I am using v.1.9 (dev build) with KSP 1.2.1

I found the observatory... since I had another mod that added all kinds of buildings to the KSC i didn't see it...Researched the body... seems to work fine... :)

Ah ok. Kerbin Side or Kerbal Konstructs I'm guessing.
Nothing much I can do about that unfortunately as the Observatory is actually integrated and modded in as a KSC Facility (just like the stock ones) whereas those other mods are not.

well to be fair.. there even is the button on left that will bring you directly to the observatory... I really just should have had a closer look...

There is that. But also I haven't released it fully and posted lots of pics and instructions.
What you could do is identify the Kerbin Side or Kerbal Konstructs packs installed and which pack it might be and ask the author to move the buildings.
