MOD Ideia Change Temp K, Cº, Fº

Recommended Posts

This comes from discussions in the kOS thread, but the problem with that is what you see isn't a number in the computing sense.  The thermometer displays its output as a string of text, and that cannot be operated on in the same way as a variable.  Were it a variable, I guarantee you that what you ask would long ago have been delivered.

KSP obviously calculates the temperature as a variable internally--otherwise, the thermometer wouldn't be able to display results that make sense--but then does the text conversion in a way that is not accessible to the modder.

It may be possible to make a new instrument with the same function as the thermometer but whose output is more mathematically accessible.  Kerbal Engineer Redux or MechJeb may show some insight into how that could be done.  You just can't do it with the stock thermometer part.

HotSpot displays thermal information about each part in a craft and you can customize your degrees preferences in there. The thermometer should display the temperature of itself, so I guess it's the same as the temperature of the part "Thermometer".

As an American with a science background, and 2 kids in school, this idea makes me die a little inside.

The small ability to change a temperature to a more locally accessible form makes you die a little? Why?

I tend to agree with @tater on this one, though maybe for slightly different reasons.  I think a °C and °K option would be quite nice, as well as educational, but as the game doesn't use the 'imperial' measurements for anything I think °F would probably be a bit out of place.

It might be out of place as far as stock goes, but this is a mode we're talking about here. I like metric units for scientific purposes as much as the next guy, but to get a sense for what the numbers correspond to I have to convert to imperial to get a sense of scale. So, regardless of how much any one person might dislike Imperial measurements there's a portion of the community for which seeing units in °F would come in handy.

My point is, we can argue °C vs °F all day, but that won't change the fact that such a mod as originally described would be useful.

What would be really funny would be an option to see the temperature in Rankine. Now THAT would spark a long argument...

I do agree there, if it were 'stock' then I think °C and °K would be all that's needed.  But for a mod then yes, why not squeeze in as many other units as the modder can calculate.

The modder can add an option in the .cfg file for the player to enter the formula that transforms from kelvin to the unit you prefer. Although interest me only in Celsius, I thought these 2 options are for the most used.
